🏫 Heritage Boundary Realignment

Big picture

Hi Heritage Families,

As you probably know, EPS is eagerly anticipating the opening of Redbud Elementary in the fall of 2021. During the boundary realignment process, the committee has developed a proposed plan that was presented to the public on March 2, 2021 at the Edmond Public Schools Administrative Center .I wanted to make you aware that the boundary lines for our attendance areas will be affected. Below is the new boundary line map.

For more info visit: https://edmondschools.net/parents-students/2021-elementary-school-boundary-changes/

Cathey Bugg, Principal

P.S. There may be an additional edit to this plan that would involve Heritage students. Please check the EPS website on Tues. March 9th or the latest version of the plan.

📚Board of Education Approves Students Returning to Four Days a Week Instruction 📚

Big picture
Monday night, March 1st, Board of Education members voted for Edmond students to return to four days a week in-person instruction later this month. This is a temporary plan only for the remainder of this school year.
The board accepted and approved the recommendations of the Return to Class and Covid Advisory Committees for elementary students to return to class on Thursday, March 11, and secondary students to return on Monday, March 22.

The time between the announcement of a return date and the actual return will be used to bring back school furniture that has been in storage and needs to be set up. Additionally, our child nutrition department needs a 10- day lead-time to order adequate food supplies.

Elementary Return Date is Thursday, March 11
Returning to more full-time in-person instruction on March 11 and March 12 gives our young scholars time to learn adjusted procedures and a new world with double the number of students. This additional time also allows the district to try and hire more elementary teachers and staff as needed for some schools where the classes have higher than optimal numbers. Then, following Spring Break, it would be a natural flow to bring our elementary students back to a four-day week.

Secondary Return Date is Monday, March 22
Returning to more full-time in-person instruction after Spring Break coincides with the beginning of the 4th nine weeks of instruction in our secondary schools and is thus a natural start date for middle and high school students.

Why Change the A/B Schedule Now?
Why would the district consider changing the A/B schedule now? Within the last week or so, three significant concerns have been addressed that support us transitioning back to in-person learning for our students. The CDC released updated guidelines and protocols on how and when to safely return to in-person learning for our students, we began vaccinating thousands of staff members, and local Covid-19 transmission rates have shown a steady decline.

Why Not Return Five Days?
Although Covid transmission rates have dropped considerably in our community, with double the number of students back in the classroom, we fully anticipate that our quarantine numbers will increase. Teachers will need to have Wednesdays to prepare online lessons for quarantined students. There are also many logistical and behind-the-scenes reasons that revolve around before and aftercare, state testing, and remediation that make 4 days a week ideal compared to 5 days a week.

📧Email from Emily Steele - Sequoyah Middle School Principal

Hi Heritage 5th Grade Parents and Students,

We wanted to let you know that our 5th to 6th enrollment process will look very different this year at Sequoyah. We are not able to bring 5th graders in for tours, as we have done in the past. Instead, We will create a video to welcome our new kiddos!

We will push out several helpful items to incoming 6th grade families.

- Video from principal/counselor that will introduce the enrollment process & walk families through the process

- Elective Introduction Videos

- electronic course description document

- electronic course selection form

We will also link all of these resources to our school website.

The timeline all of this will occur is as follows:

- 3/1: sending videos and all documents

- 3/15 - 3/31: families will enter course requests in Infinite Campus for their child (we will email instructions on how to do this and probably have an explanation video, as the date approaches)

- 3/24 & 3/31: our site counselors will be available to our incoming families at specific times to assist anyone that needs help with the enrollment process

We do not plan for any in-person events, until maybe later in April/May, and this will just be the admin/counselor duo coming to say hi and introduce ourselves in person. In lieu of tours, we are putting together video tours that will be shared at a later time with incoming families.

💉District Employees to Receive Covid 19 Vaccine at Vaccination Pods 💉

Big picture

The week of February 22-26, Edmond Public Schools private, third-party health provider Total Wellness will make available approximately 2050 Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to EPS employees.

Over the last several days, the district has been working behind the scenes with Total Wellness to set up four separate vaccination pods at two district locations; Edmond Schools Administrative Center (EPSAC) and Edmond Santa Fe High School.

In an email to parents, Superintendent Bret Towne said, “Employee vaccinations and the soon-to-be-completed work of the Covid Advisory Committee are crucial to creating a safe environment in our schools and a major step forward in reopening our classrooms to more full-time, in-person instruction.”

Total Wellness nurses will distribute the vaccines. District and some school staff volunteers will assist the nurses with collecting paperwork and other administrative duties. The pods are exclusive to teachers and school staff. Employees received a link to sign up for the opportunity to receive the vaccine.

Only those who receive the first dose with EPS will be eligible to receive the second dose.

The tentative dates for employees to receive the second dose of the Moderna vaccines are March 26-April 2.

💛Resolving conflicts and solving problems using the Time Machine

Ask your students to show you how to “turn back time” and work out their problems using the executive function part of their brain. Make a copy of this tiny yellow mat and use it to resolve conflicts or disagreements (real or make believe).

There are steps.

  1. Roll back time. Roll your hands in a circle to signify going back.

  2. Ask, “Are you willing to solve the problem?” Students stand facing each other at each end of the Time Machine mat.

  3. Move to the first set of footprints and take a S.T.A.R. breath.

  4. Move to the next set of footprints and put your hand on your heart and wish well to each other.

  5. Move to the next step. Focus on the goal. Chant “1-2-3...Let’s do it!”

  6. Move to the next set of footprints and use helpful words, The person who is hurt says, “I don’t like it when you ________. Next time, please _________.” Tell them what you want them to do next time, not what you don’t want them to do. The other person says “Okay, I can do that.”

  7. Look at each other and reconnect using a handshake, hug, or high five to show you are good with each other.

This is a relationship skill we want our Heritage family to learn and use to resolve conflicts and solve problems in our relationships. We will be practicing this at school, in the classrooms, on the playground, etc. Our goal is for students to become so familiar with this skill that they will automatically use this to solve problems without using the mat and even without adult intervention.
