Blue Jay Line-Up
Critical information for the coming week at West End!
Computer Collection
Please make sure students bring their laptops and chargers to school with them this Monday, April 10th. Devices will remain at school beginning Monday through the duration of the state testing window. If a student is leaving for Tremont on Monday, they can bring their device to school with them on Thursday. Students will return to their 1st-period class at the end of each school day to return and charge their devices for the next day. Students will not be permitted to take their devices home for any reason during this time frame. This is a necessary step to ensure all students have their fully charged devices each day for online state testing.

8th grade Dollywood Trip
Dear Parents,
As the end of the school year and your student’s stay at West End comes to an end, we have been working diligently to plan a cost-effective, fun trip to send out 8th graders off in style.
We are excited to be taking our 8th grade students to Dollywood for a fun day at the park on May 22! Please email Kathryn Nation, 8th grade math teacher, at knation@mnps.org with any questions regarding the trip. Please note that all students will need transportation to and from West End.
We are asking that deposits of $30.00 to be made by Friday, April 28, so that we can get a more concrete idea about the number of students who will be attending. The total cost of the field trip will be $75.00 per student to be paid in full by Wednesday, May 17. We would like for as many of our 8th graders to go as possible and we are so blessed to have received donations from our wonderful PTSO. If you are able and would like to support a student in need you may donate additional money to your child’s deposit.
Please send in deposits through SchoolCash online. Instructions for paying online are below. (Online Payment available Tuesday, April 11th.) If you are unable to pay online, please reach out to Ms. Nation. Receipts will be provided for your records. Please remember that all money submitted is non-refundable. In the event that your child receives OSS or ISS prior to the trip, they will not be allowed to attend the trip and your deposit will not be refunded.
Thank you for all of your continued support!
SchoolCash Online
How parents can create a SchoolCash Online account:
- Parents can create an account by visiting the SchoolCash Online webpage on the MNPS website. They can then attach their student(s) to their profile.
- Parents can also choose to receive email notifications when any item becomes available for their child. This will help reduce the amount of forgotten payments and make payments easy to track.
Band and Orchestra Summer Clinics
Once again, this year’s clinics are funded by ESSER 3.0 and are free of charge to all MNPS students!
Attached below are the registration flyers (including registration QR code and site link), FAQ sheet, and physical registration forms for summer band and orchestra clinics.

Link to Orchestra Clinic Registration: bit.ly/SummerOrchestraMNPS
The translation department is working on Spanish versions of these forms and we will send them to you as soon as they are available.
Unicycle
It's that time of year again. It's time to stock the Unicycle closet. Unicycle is a school clothing recycling program that collects and distributes "outgrown, not worn out" items to MNPS students. Since our school has a looser dress code, we collect what we wear--jeans, joggers, t-shirts and hoodies. If you have donations, please leave them in the Unicycle basket in the office or the one by the side door where the buses drop off.
Thank you!
Honors Opportunities for 2023-2024 School Year
Dear West End Families,
We are pleased to again announce an opportunity for our students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade next year. Honors English Language Arts (ELA) will be offered to students in 6th-8th grade, and Honors Math will be offered to 6th and 7th grade. 6th and 7th grade Honors Math is taught at an accelerated pace in order to cover all 8th grade content by the end of the 7th grade year. In 8th grade, students have the opportunity to take Integrated Math I for High School credit. Per district guidance, we are allowed to offer Physical Science as high school credit. We will look to add this certification to our staff between now and the start of school next year. There is also an opportunity for students to take High School Spanish at West End via the MNPS Virtual School. Staffing makes offering this course in-person a challenge, but we continue to look for creative solutions.
While all classes at West End offer students a relevant and rigorous IB education, honors courses will substantially exceed the content standards, learning expectations, and performance indicators approved by the State Board of Education. Teachers of honors courses will model instructional approaches that facilitate maximum interchange of ideas among students: independent study, self-directed research and learning, and appropriate use of technology.
Please be aware that your student’s enrollment in an honors course will be based on previous performance, not previous placement. The data to determine honors placements will come from many sources including but not limited to: FAST testing, TCAP (TNReady) testing, grades, and teacher recommendations. Students who would like to be considered for Honors should complete the application linked below: https://forms.office.com/r/QGgM3Cga9F
Please have your student complete their application by April 28th. Honors placements will come at the end of May to begin scheduling classes for the 2023-2024 year.
Thank you,
James A Stephens III
AVID Elective 2023-2024
Dear West End Families,
During the 2023-24 school year, rising 7th and 8th grade students have the opportunity to enroll in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), a program dedicated to helping students achieve academic and post-secondary success.
The key component of the AVID program is the AVID elective class, which supports students as they challenge themselves in rigorous coursework. Students learn the importance of study skills, note-taking, time management, collaboration, writing skills, and research skills, while being immersed in a post-secondary culture. The class also includes tutoring sessions that are led by college students or standout juniors and seniors to help ensure students are successful in academically rigorous classes. Additionally, the AVID course provides access to information about post-secondary opportunities through field trips, guest speakers, college tutors, scholarship opportunities, and college admission requirement information.
AVID is a year-long course that would be added to your child’s schedule during Related Arts. Students will also receive opportunities for enrichment and meet physical activity requirements if they choose to enroll in AVID. Please complete the AVID Application by clicking HERE or using the QR Code below by Friday, April 28th. The AVID instructor will follow up with more details once all applications are received. If you have any questions regarding AVID, please call 615-298- 8425 or email our Dean of Instruction, Adam Warner at adam.warner@mnps.org.

Schoology Access Codes for Parents
Student assignments and activities are posted in our Learning Management System, Schoology. All parents and Guardians can access their student's data by setting up a parent account. All you need is your individual code. Please e-mail James.Stephensiii@mnps.org from your registered e-mail account and he will reply with your Schoology Access code. Since it's long and burdensome to type in, this cut and paste method is much easier to manage.
Campus Portal for Parents
Parents and Guardians can also access The Campus Portal for Infinite Campus as well. Campus is our Student Management System that has attendance, schedules, assessment, contact information, behavior logs and more. Just like with Schoology, you have an individual Parent code. Please e-mail James.Stephensiii@mnps.org from your registered e-mail account and he will reply with your Schoology Access code.
Check out Campus Portal information on this link: Campus Portal.
