Bomb: The Race to Build- and Steal- the World's Most Dangerous Weapon: This book is by the same author of Port Chicago 50. It examines the events leading up to the creation of the atomic bomb. There are lots of different elements to this story. Russian and American Spies, Chemistry and Physics, History (WWII and rise of Hitler) and ethics (Oppenheimer opposes the expansion of the Manhattan project and the H-bomb). Teacher's guide is available for this title.
Rain Reign: Written by Ann Martin (Babysitter Club), this is a heart-warming story about Rose, a girl with high-functioning Autism, and her dog Rain. Rose is raised by her father who has a difficult time managing Rose due to her autism diagnosis that results in her obsession with rules and homonyms. A great read!
Eyes Wide Open: Going Beyond the Environmental Headlines. This book is written for teens and it encourages them to question what they hear and read in the media. First up: Non-fiction. Kennedy's Last Day's: The Assassination That Defined a Generation by Bill O'Reilly. This version has been adapted from O'Reilly's best selling historical thriller Killing Kennedy. This is a special illustration edition that makes that fateful day in Dallas accessible to our middle school students.
And now for my fiction indulgence: To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. If your students loved The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy, they will love this! A box of unsent love letters sits in our main character's closet for years and years until her little sister decides to mail them out!!
