What is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence tells you what a paragraph is about.

It is the most important sentence in a paragraph.

It contains the main idea of a paragraph.

What is a Main Idea?

The main idea will tell you what the rest of the sentences (details) in a paragraph are about.

Topic Sentences ...

Tell who or what the paragraph is about.

Topic sentences also tells what is happening!

It is usually the first sentence of a paragraph.

Let's look at a short paragraph..

I had a great time at my friend's birthday party! First we played some games. I won three prizes. We had cake and ice cream next. That was my favourite After eating we watched my friend open presents. Finally, it was time to go home. I can't wait to go to another party!

The topic sentence that tells the main idea is ...

I had a great time at my friend's birthday party!

The other sentences are details about this main idea.

Find the Topic Sentence

To find the topic sentence ask yourself, "What is the paragraph about?"

If you can answer that question you will be able to find the topic sentence, which will give you the main idea of the paragraph.
