ADDING RIGOR AT CHS
Did you know that in the last 2 years, Clinton High School has gone from zero students enrolled in an AP (Advanced Placement) class to 100?
Advanced Placement classes provide challenging and rigorous coursework for students and helps prepare them for college.
In Mrs. Jaynes' AP Psychology class, students have been discussing sensation and perception, and recently participated in a depth perception lab to further their understanding of the topic.
Students worked with partners and their task was to determine how depth perception works, which eye is their dominate eye, and how their vision would be affected if they became vision-impaired.
At the conclusion of the lab, students discussed how a vision impairment would affect everyday activities, such as driving, catching a ball, walking, and even placing your pen to a paper.
5TH GRADE PROBLEM SOLVERS
Real world problems are being solved in 5th grade!
Students in Ms. Ryberg's class were engineers last week as they discovered different way to save "Beachtown" from a hurricane.
Students worked together to form a budget and a plan to save the town from disaster.
See more pictures here.
HUNTING SEASON IN 8TH GRADE SCIENCE
Students in Mrs. Pittaluga's class studied the carrying capacity of a population of panthers and how resources limit the amount of panthers that can live in a given area.
During the experiment students could only walk to gather food since panthers stalk their food. They could also only gather one type of food at a time since panthers kill prey then take it back to their den.
To make the experiment more realistic, some students played the part of a panther with a disadvantage, such as being blind or having lost a foot.
STEM in Kindergarten
Going beyond naps, playtime and coloring in Kindergarten!
To get in the holiday spirit, and to prepare for an upcoming field trip, kindergarten students have been studying pumpkins.
After reading the poem, Five Little Pumpkins, students in Mrs. Potter's class took part in a STEM challenge. Students were tasked with designing a structure that would support the size and weight of a variety of different pumpkins.
Through collaboration with their classmates and trial and error, students used different materials to design structures that supported their five pumpkins.
Preparing Students for Life After High School
Empowering and preparing students for life after high school is important, and this happened at the annual College and Career Fair.
On October 10th, all of the district's juniors and seniors, as well as 200 students from nearby districts, had the opportunity to talk to over 65 colleges, businesses, and military representatives.
Thanks to Leslie Largent, Career Services Coordinator at Clinton Technical School, for her work in arranging such a successful event.

NOLAN APPLEGATE
This Clinton Middle School teacher comes from a long line of educators!
Mr. Nolan Applegate is originally from LeRoy, KS, a town of about 500 people. He grew up on a farm in a county without a stoplight. His father was a teacher, counselor, and principal. and his mother a loan officer and a legal secretary. Their family raised cattle year-round and worked a truck garden during the summer. He has a twin brother and younger sister who are both teachers as well.
Nolan completed his bachelor's degree in history from Emporia State University in 2006. He took a 10-year detour into retail that moved his family from Kansas to Nebraska then to Missouri, he then finished his teaching certification at UCM.
Since coming to the CSD 3 years ago, Mr. Applegate has taught 6th grade social studies and coaches 8th grade basketball.
Nolan's wife Mandy teaches 1st grade in Warrensburg and together they have two daughters, Lily (11) and Addy (8). Rocky is their 5-year-old terrier poodle mix that is like a third child. Nolan and his family love to be outdoors.....kayaking, hiking, running or really anything that involves exploring.
"I couldn't have asked for a better group of coworkers to work with and spend time with on a daily basis. My 6th-grade team especially has been awesome and welcoming."
