NEW! Message from the Principal

It's been a fun and action-packed week at MVMS! We've learned more about drug and alcohol prevention and stated our commitment to being drug and alcohol free during Red Ribbon Week; we held Club Rush where students were able to sign up for a variety of exciting new clubs at MVMS; and we celebrated Halloween with a costume contest.

Thanks to all for a wonderful week and a great start to Quarter 2!

Your Proud Principal,

NEW! Meet Our Staff

Each week we will be featuring a few of our dedicated staff members in a Meet Our Staff Section. This week we'd like to introduce you to Shawn Tran and Kristin Bratt.

Shawn Tran - 6th Grade, Lit/Lang/AVID, 8 years at MVMS

I grew up in Kansas and moved to Palm Springs, California right after graduating from college. I taught upper elementary for 6 years in Palm Springs and then moved to the San Diego area. I spent 10 years as the Assistive Technology Specialist for PUSD and then returned to the classroom in August 2014. I absolutely love teaching middle school and seeing my students grow and develop into young adults during their 3 years

at MVMS.

My husband and I have 2 children - Leah, a 7th grader, and Zach, a 5th grader. We love to go camping as a family and are looking forward to heading up to Yellowstone next summer. We also love hiking and exploring the many trails in the San Diego area. Personally, I love running and am looking forward to completing my next marathon during the spring.

Kristin Bratt - Instructional Assistant II, Critical Skills, 13 years at MVMS

I grew up in Northern California ,Sacramento to be exact. I came to San Diego to attend SDSU, and met my lovely husband there! I received my Bachelors degree in Child Development and am a proud Aztec alumni. My husband and I love to attend the football and basketball games, season ticket holders before COVID. I have 3 children who all attended MVMS! I love to read, make crafts, hike, walk with friends, drink kombucha, hang out with my family and listen to Justin Bieber! What I love most about being an IA at MVMS is hands down the students. They are simply amazing. They make me laugh and smile everyday!

Did You Know…

Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year's Pledge Drive. Did you know your generous donation to the Foundation may easily be DOUBLED?! Many companies in our community have programs that match employee donations to qualified charitable organizations, such as the Mesa Verde Foundation. Please check with your HR department, or use this link to see if your company offers matching. Doubling your gift can be as easy as making a phone call or sending an email to your company! If you have any questions or need assistance regarding corporate matching, please contact our treasurer, Carolyn Russell at mvmsfoundationtreasurer@gmail.com.

We rely on our parent community to make this school everything it can be for our students, and we truly appreciate your support. Donations can be made online at https://mvmsfoundation.org/pledgedrive.html.

Thank you for all you do for our Eagles!

No Place for Hate Club

On October 6th an interest meeting was held for students to start a No Place for Hate Club on campus this year. Students who attended or contacted Mrs. Marcotte were asked to give individual input as to which day of the week and time frame worked best for them. For the remainder of our first semester, the club will meet twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays after school (see exact dates below). We will meet from 3:15 to 3:45 pm in room 332. All students are welcome! Students who are in our ASES after school program are welcome to attend as well, just check in with ASES first. We want to build this club, our Students’ voices are important and bring forward the best ideas in how to build relationships and break down bias. Our meeting next week will focus on ideas for rolling out our school wide, No Place for Hate Pledge.

Get Involved

Would you like to be a volunteer at Mesa Verde? Our volunteers at Mesa Verde are an integral part of school. Our volunteers help with events throughout the school year including after school and evening activities, classroom and club support, 6th grade Olympics, 7th grade History Faire, 8th Grade Constitutional Challenge and Promotion.

New guidance from the Poway Unified Board of Education is allowing us to expand our volunteer opportunities, effective 10/18/21. Volunteers must be fully-vaccinated and show proof of vaccination or show proof of a negative PCR COVID test within the 72 hours prior to volunteering. If you would like more information, please contact Natalie Reyes at (858) 538-5478 or nreyes@powayusd.com.

Sign up here if you would like to hear more.

Library Volunteers

The Mesa Verde library is looking for volunteers to help in the library during the lunch periods (Mon/Tues/Thur/Fri 11:00 to 12:40 and Wednesdays 11:40 to 1:00) once we are permitted to have volunteers again. We need help assisting and supervising students during our busy lunch periods. Volunteers may choose which day of the week and how often you would like to come in (once a week, every other week, once a month, etc.) If you are interested please contact Heather Ryan: hryan@powayusd.com. We will collect this information now to have it in preparation for when volunteers are allowed.

If you are not sure if you are an approved volunteer, contact Natalie Reyes at (858) 538-5478 or nreyes@powayusd.com.

Job Opportunities

Do you enjoy working with students? Mesa Verde has a few job opportunities in the classroom and in the office such as noon duties and Instruction Assistants ranging from 2 to 6 hours each day. If you or someone you know would be interested, click here for more information or to apply.

Lost & Found

Has your child lost anything at MV? If so, please have them take a look in the lost and found. MV’s lost and found is accessible to students and located in between the health and main office entry in a large metal cabinet. Any special/personal items like retainers, glasses, jewelry, house keys, headphones, electronics, etc. are inside the office with Mrs. Rinehart. At the end of each month, any items that are left in the lost and found will be donated or discarded. Please encourage your student to pick up any lost items. As a reminder, please do your best to label all items to assist your student in locating them if lost.

Feeling Sick? Not Sure What To Do...

Call Mesa Verde's Health Tech at (858) 538-5478, ext. 3107. For more information, click here.

Checking Out Your Student Early

If your student needs to leave early from school, please send a note with your student. Notes should be given to the Attendance secretary in the Administration Office before school. Calling the school in advance, or sending a note, will prevent delays for you (such as trying to get your student while they are running on the lower field) and will help us to minimize interruptions to the classrooms. If you schedule a last minute appointment you may call the Attendance Hotline @ (858) 538-5692 to have an off campus pass sent to your student.

When writing a note please indicate the following:

  • Your student's first and last name
  • Their grade
  • The time your student needs to leave school
  • Whether or not your student will return that day

Please meet your child at the Attendance desk to be signed out at the time of departure. Be prepared to show your identification when checking out your child. If your student returns to school after being picked up early, please have him/her check back in at the Attendance desk before heading to class.

Attendance Hotline

Call the Attendance Hotline at (858) 538-5692 if your child is absent from school.
