HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
December, 2017
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MRS. FORD
Happy Holidays from Mrs. Ford and the Dummer Staff!
Cold Weather Is Coming!
We are beginning to experience some cold weather, but as we all know, the weather will change quickly and without notice. With these changes in the air, I need to remind everyone about the importance of dressing for inclement weather. Please remember the following points when getting your children ready for school: warm, dry clothing is essential every day because we will be going outside in the morning and for recess as long as the wind chill is above 10 degrees. Students are expected to have their coats, hats, scarves and gloves with them during lunch recess. Students will not be allowed to return to their lockers after deciding the weather is too cold. With close to 300 students, we are unable to supervise pupils in the hallways when we are outside for recess. Students should be reminded that snowball fighting is not allowed before or after school or during recess. Also, poor weather conditions mean that streets and sidewalks will be slippery and proper care needs to be taken whenever walking to and from school, especially with traffic congestion before and after school. For those of you who are going to start picking up your child as the weather gets worse, follow the rules to keep all children safe. This means dropping children off on the east side of the street to cut down on students in the street and no cell phones in a school zone. Please do not pick up or drop off behind the school. The parking lot can be a very unsafe place with it being difficult to see students and teachers between cars. Also, please note that students enter the school at 7:55 and should be in their classrooms by 8:00 or they are marked tardy. When the weather turns colder there tends to be more traffic due to student drop off, so please plan accordingly.
Thank you!

NEWS FROM OUR NURSE
WHEN TO KEEP A CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL
Parents/Guardians often have trouble knowing whether their child is too ill to go to school. In no way are we saying that children should be kept home for every complaint, but that there are some definite symptoms that warrant staying home from school.
Your child is too ill to go to school if he/she has any of the following symptoms:
· Fever – If your child has a temperature of 100 degrees (or higher) now or in the past 24 hours, he/she should not attend school. Children are to be fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
· Vomiting and/or diarrhea in the past 24 hours.
· Shortness of breath or wheezing (not controlled with an inhaler if he/she has asthma).
· A cough that interrupts his/her normal activity or keeps him/her, up at night.
· Drainage from the eye (children diagnosed with pink eye, must receive 24 hours of a prescription before returning to school).
· Severe sore throat (if ordered an antibiotic, must receive 24 hours of a prescription medication before returning to school).
Please reinforce these health tips with your children:
· Wash their hands after using the bathroom, blowing their nose, and before and after eating.
· Do not share food or drink with other people.
· Use tissues to blow their noses, then place in garbage; do not wipe with hand or sleeve.
· Follow basic health hygiene practices to limit the spread of illness, like the 3 C’s (clean, cover, and contain).
· Clean – wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
· Cover – your cough or sneeze with your elbow or sleeve.
· Contain – students should stay home if they are sick.
Please consult your child's physician with any symptoms you are unsure of.
Thank you for your cooperation,
SMILE ILLINOIS MOBILE DENTISTS
Smile Illinois Mobile Dentists will be bringing their on-site preventive dental care program to H.E. Dummer School on February 22, 2018. The Mobile Dentists' team will set up a mini-dental office in our building and do exams, cleanings, apply fluoride, and sealants. Dental insurances, including Public Aid/Kid Care, are accepted and grants to provide dental preventive services for children needing financial assistance are available. No child is ever turned away by Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs because of financial need.
The Mobile Dentists require a minimum number of 15 participating students before they will come to our school. Please return your signed permission slip by Friday, December 22, 2017, if you are interested in having your child participate in this program. Students currently in Kindergarten, Second, and Sixth grade are required by State law to turn in a completed dental exam form by May 15, 2018. Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs meet the State's dental examination requirements.

FABULOUS 4TH GRADE
In fourth grade it is so important to work on your multiplication facts to memory, they will be a big help to you now and in the future. So, get those Math Minutes turned in each week. Fourth graders are also working on place value to a million, as well as building fluency with addition and subtraction problems to the thousands. Multiplication and division are being expanded on as well.
In Social Studies the classes are working on map skills and the opening chapters of their Social Studies books which introduce the United State regions and government branches and levels (local, state, national). Finally in Science, we are working on either electricity and magnets or plant and animal life sciences.
Fourth graders are enjoying making new friends from the two primary school buildings they did not attend. They are enjoying daily clips from Rusty, who kicked off our kindness campaign. The students are working on the skills to become the diamonds their teachers know they are. Ask your student about this! It is a fantastic beginning of the school year!
FANTASTIC 5TH GRADE
This quarter in Reading, our fifth graders will be focusing on comparing and contrasting, analyzing multiple accounts of the same story, and identifying evidence to support answers to comprehension questions.
In Social Studies, our students will be discussing the American Revolution, American government, and westward expansion.
In December, our fifth graders will wrap up the 2nd quarter with a trip to visit District #430's Kindergarten classes. Students will be visiting these classes to help the Kindergarten students write letters to Santa. This is an exciting and festive time for everyone!
