Winter Break is in Sight!
Our Community of Learners is Working Hard Until the End
Informational Text Practice with Marie Hilley
Our community of learners took a break from the short stories in order to read an informational text about a woman named Marie Hilley to broaden our knowledge. We read a text that went along with the same text features we have been studying while also answering a variety of higher level questions. We had in depth discussions about the questions and the text itself in small discussion groups as we split the class into two random groups that met with a teacher. It was exciting to see how many more students shared as they were not in front of their whole class and felt more comfortable discussing answers and ideas!
A Visit to the Library
Each student has a different ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development), or better known as a reading level range, so we took our students to the library to select books on their level. Please encourage your child to read for 15-20 minutes at home each night.
Complex Sentences
In order to practice identifying independent and subordinate clauses within complex sentences, we worked in teams to complete an activity. First, we had to identify which clauses were which, then match them up, and finally add in the appropriate punctuation.
The Giver
Is the movie really that different from the book? We watched the movie as a class and learned that there are indeed a lot of differences between the book and the movie. Each child had a different reaction as to which they enjoyed more, so ask your child which one they preferred.
Compare and Contrast Essay
While watching the movie version of The Giver, we filled in a graphic organizer noting the similarities and differences between the novel and the movie. Then, we worked towards writing a compare/contrast essay one step at a timein class. We finished writing the essay this week, distributed the rubrics, and will have the students print their final copy to be turned in during class on Monday.
