MISSION
VISION
A Note from your Principal
Dear Tiger Families,
Our goal at West Newton is to make each day count! As we finish out day 12 this school year, I am Decatur Proud of our students and staff for responding to new safety procedures and routines with discipline and focus.
We are jumping into academics as well with continued emphasis on academic and content vocabulary, and our new English Language Arts curriculum, “Into Reading” for grades 1-5 and “Into Literature” for 6th grade (HMH). All students, including remote and on-site, are learning and practicing how to access technology resources such as Canvas, Webex, Savvas (formerly Pearson Math), and HMH. Thank you for your continued support with charging iPads nightly and reminding your child to bring the iPad back to school each day. For our remote learning families, we appreciate your support and communication to ensure active participation through Webex and Canvas.
We are “stronger together” as the West Newton Family of students, parents/guardians, and staff, all working toward increased student achievement. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. LeMay, Principal
Social Emotional Learning
Here at West Newton, we want students to be successful in all aspects of school. In addition to teaching core academic subjects, teachers and staff teach Social Emotional Learning skills or SEL.
What is SEL? Teaching SEL skills your child the tools to understand their emotions, communicate effectively, engage appropriately with other students, and cope with hardships and disappointments.
How do we teach SEL? We teach using the Second Step program. It is taught in all grade levels and in all schools throughout Decatur Township. It teaches skills in the following areas:
Skills for Learning: Students learn to help themselves, listen attentively, stay on task, and be assertive when needing help.
Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their emotions and recognize the emotions of others.
Emotion Management: Students learn skills to help them calm down or reset when dealing with unexpected emotions.
Problem Solving: Students learn the process of solving problems in a positive way.
How can you support SEL at home? In addition to the lessons taught in class, your child will be bringing home Home Links that accompany the lessons. These Home Links have fun activities and conversation starters that you can do with your child.
I am honored to be the Social Emotional Learning Coach at West Newton. Please keep your eyes open for more Second Step updates!
Sincerely,
Sara Whitman
