Valley View Elementary

Welcome Back

I hope you enjoyed the long break! I sure did. I spent lots of time with my family, traveled to upper Michigan and enjoyed soft powdery snow, and even cheered on the Packers last night at the game. Today was a good sign many of the kids were happy to be back too! We have lots of fun and learning ahead of us this school year. This week we begin STAR testing for reading, and STAR math is scheduled for next week. In class we set a goal to work on transitions between activity to the next and practiced what it means to be ready quickly so we have more time to incorporate more movement breaks in our day. Our favorites are from the website Go Noodle, which your child can access at home with your help on a tablet, computer, or even Apple TV.

What's Coming

Reading:

We are exploring non-fiction books, and will be studying non-fiction text features. These are the interesting parts of non-fiction books/magazines like the pictures, captions, headings, and bold words. We also began new guided reading groups today!

Math:

We will are wrapping up Unit 3 and doing a few extra lessons about collections and graphing. Wednesday's math homework is about this also! Please look ahead and help your child come up with something you have at your house that they can sort by attribute and graph.

Science & Writing:

We are going to continue writing non-fiction pieces and science procedures. Today we began our small moments about what we did during the long holiday break!

Handwriting:

A few students are asking to begin...cursive! We will wrap up our handwriting book this month and begin cursive in February.

Math Homework

Our class is trying something new with math homework for the next couple weeks. Instead of the home connections book blue book (with the blue label), you will see a homework packet with this week's homework assignments in it. I will still assign homework on Monday and Wednesday's but I will not collect the packet until it is all complete. Students still have two days to complete each assignment, but the whole packet is due by Friday. I will have a basket in the room where completed packets can be turned in when done!

Our Holiday Party!

Thank you to Julie Altshafl for planning an awesome holiday party! The kids had a great time. I appreciate every parent who came to help, brought in food or a craft, and those who helped our party from home. I will post pictures on class dojo/class story sometime this week.
