School Updates
Dear WAS Families,
Wow, it has been quite a busy few weeks! We first thank the parents for the tremendous turnout at our open house! It was great to see the hallways filled with families engaged in their child's classroom learning and supporting the school. We saw many families taking advantage of the free books we were handing out in the lobby and attending the Title 1 information sessions. As discussed, we will have our first Title one Family Engagement night on Thursday, November 17th, from 5:30-7:00 pm. Dinner and Childcare will be provided. The topic will be how families can support reading improvement in the home.
This will be part one in a three-part series that connects to our school goals and Title 1 plan for improving families' reading, math, and social-emotional learning.
Secondly, we would like to thank our fire department for hosting an engaging fire safety series for our K-2 students. Marshal the Mascot was there in full force with about eight members of the RFD discussing fire safety in the home, fire extinguisher use, and ensuring families have safety plans for evacuating their homes in the event of an emergency. See below for some of the pictures from that day.
Lastly, we want to remind families that this week is bus safety week. Please remind children that they need to be courteous, respectful, and safe on all buses and that the best way to keep safe and keep all others safe is to follow the rules as outlined in our family handbook, pages 12-15. MAKE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD THANKS THEIR BUS DRIVER THIS MONTH FOR DOING THE HARD WORK OF GETTING THEM TO AND FROM SCHOOL.

Notes from Ms. Emrich
Our students have participated in a bus safety evacuation drill and a school-wide morning meeting was held recently with a member of the Rochester Police Department to talk with students about the definition of a stranger (a stranger is an adult or a teenager you don't know), and identifying trusted adults, both at school and at home, and within our local community. School staff also reviewed the following checklist with students in grades K-5, and we encourage you to talk with your students at home about this very important topic as well. Stay safe!
*Don't talk to strangers!
*Ask first! Always ask your trusted adults before taking food or gifts from someone.
*Check in! If a stranger asks you for help, check in with your trusted adults to see if it is ok.
*Don't wear your name! Don't wear clothing or backpacks that show your first name out in public.
*No unwanted touches! If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, run away and tell a trusted adult.
*Don't take a ride! If a stranger offers you a ride, ask your trusted adults first.
*Choose a password! Create a code with your family that can be used when needed.
*Stick with your friends! In public places, stay near family or friends.
Counselor's Corner
Hello. Greetings from the School Counselor. We are off to a great school year. One thing that you might not realize I handle as part of my duties within Guidance is handling Attendance issues. Rochester School District has a well-defined Attendance Policy, which can be found in our Parent Handbook, starting on page 7 -- click here.
Remember to call the front desk if there is an absence, but more importantly, your child can't learn if they aren't here. Please ensure that every day your child is healthy, they are at school to get the most of these days that they can.
Thanks much.
Michael Tritter, William Allen School Counselor
