PERSEVERANCE:
Refusing to give up when life gets hard.
Have you ever had a hard time with learning a concept at school? What did you do in order to finally accomplish your goal and learn? Can you think of a time when you had given up on something? How did it feel when you gave up? Now think of a time when you powered through and accomplished a goal even when it was hard. Contrast the two feelings.
WHAT IS IT?
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.” – Newt Gingrich
Perseverance is teaching our kids to have grit.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Life is hard. Life is messy. Life never goes just like we plan. If our children are prepared to handle these challenges in stride, they will be much more successful in life.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE:
· Working through difficulties to reach previously set goals
· Seeking feedback and using it constructively
· Viewing challenges as an opportunity to grow
SET THE BAR HIGH
High, but reasonable expectations are an important part of building persistence. Convey to your child that you believe they can do hard things. It is important, though, that our expectations do not exceed the child’s abilities, and that they have the tools they need to succeed.
SET GOALS
Help your child set reasonable goals (academic or personal) and make a plan to achieve them. If possible, track the progress toward his/her goal with a graph or a table. For example, if the goal is to practice the piano regularly, you could graph the minutes they spend practicing each night. Help your child connect the “hard work” to his/her successes. You could say something like, “You sounded great at tonight’s recital. I can tell that you worked so hard to meet your goal. I bet that feels great.”
GIVE YOUR CHILD A PEP TALK
Remind your child of times they persisted and were successful. You could say something like, “Remember when you were so scared to take the training wheels off of your bike? You fell down the first few times you tried, but you kept at it and now you can ride all by yourself! I bet that felt so good.”
MODEL IT
Tell stories about times in your life when something didn’t go as planned. Explain how you persisted through challenges and why. Share stories in current events that focus on people who have persisted through challenges. Model positive reactions to setbacks in your own life. You could say, “This didn’t go the way I planned, but it will be okay, and I will think of a new way to solve this problem.” It is important to verbalize in this way, as this will become how your child thinks to himself when he comes to a challenge.
IF YOUR CHILD STRUGGLES, TRY:
· Breaking larger tasks into smaller, more manageable ones (and then show her what she was able to accomplish!)
· Ask, “How can I help you?”
· Resist the urge to “rescue” or give answers
· Take a break and come back to it later
TALK ABOUT IT!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about perseverance with your child:
· What do you think perseverance means and why is it important?
· Tell me about a time when it was hard to get through a challenge. How did you feel after?
· What are some things that are hard for you to push through, and how can I help you?
· What are three goals you have? What may be some challenges to meeting these goals? What will happened if you don’t give up?
