Corbett Grade School

August 2022

Corbett Grade School Principal, Michelle Dawkins

Dear Families,

Corbett Grade School staff are busy preparing for the 2022-23 school year. Each grade level team will be meeting to plan for the upcoming new year. Our building is getting a new roof, the parking and playgrounds have been sealed, and seven classrooms are receiving much needed new carpet.

We will be welcoming our newest Corbett Cardinals to Kindergarten Camp during the week of August 8-11. They will meet a couple of the teachers, explore the classrooms, and practice some essential routines. They will be learning about entering and exiting the building, school bus safety, and eating in the cafeteria. We are excited to give them the opportunity to become familiar with our school before the first day of school for all students.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, August 25, which is our Welcome Back to School Open House. We will welcome everyone to join us to view the classrooms, drop off supply donations, and meet your child's teacher. Class lists will be sent out on or before August 15, 2022.

Our first day of school is Monday, August 29. School begins at 7:55am for students in grades 2-5 and 8am for students in grades K/1. Drop off begins at 7:40am. A map for arrival and pick up is included in this newsletter. Pick up is at 3:35pm for grades K-3 and 3:40pm for grades 4/5.

We are excited to begin the school year!

Meet Our New Staff Members!

Dana Karki

Dana Karki (Gleich) is joining the 2/3 team at Corbett Grade School. She is very excited to work with this amazing age of children and she is really looking forward to being a part of this Corbett community. She has been teaching for the last 14 years in Portland Public Schools and cannot wait to get started here at Corbett. She lives in Troutdale with her husband and two kids who both attend Corbett Grade School. Some of her favorites include: reading, swimming, camping, and anything with glitter, sparkles or Harry Potter! Our staff and students are very happy that Ms. Karki is joining us with her “sparkly” attitude and love for learning! Ms. Karki is moving into Mr. McDermott's classroom.

Devon Groh

Devon Groh taught English the Corbett High School last year, and has now accepted a position at Corbett Grade School. Devon is excited to be joining the grade school K/1 team! His favorite thing about teaching is sharing his love for learning, and specifically, he has a passion for language arts, history, and earth science. Outside of school, his favorite things to do are hiking, camping, off-roading, or really anything that involves exploring the beautiful wilderness around us. We are very excited to welcome Mr. Groh to Corbett Grade School. Mr. Groh is moving into Mrs. Wold's classroom.

Catherine Arndt

Catherine Arndt has been a substitute teacher at Corbett for the last few years, and now is joining the 2/3 team at Corbett Grade School. This year will be her first year teaching, and she is very excited to bring her passion for mental health and meditation into the classroom. She grew up and lives in Corbett. Catherine and her husband have a son and two dogs. Outside of school, Catherine loves reading, Harry Potter, gardening, hiking, camping, golf and traveling. Ms. Arndt is moving into Ms. Dorr's classroom.

Playground Upgrades

We are fundraising this school year for some much needed upgrades to our playgrounds. We have a plan for new swings, slides, and removing the gravel in favor of a surface area that is more accessible to all. The asphalt for each playground was resealed this summer and so we now need to paint our four square and hopscotch games. Please contact a member of playground committee member if you would like to donate money or time for installation.
