5.5 Period Classes are optional for PHS students. Students earn 2.5 elective credits per each 5.5 class taken during the trimester (two classes maximum), and grades are given on a pass/fail basis - not a letter grade.

Preparing for College & Career - Spring 2023
Juniors, Class of 2024, you can start preparing for college and career by understanding all the different options for life after high school by attending college and career presentations, fairs, and reviewing online resources. Our PHS website has a Month by month calendar, Junior Planning Video and Career & College Resources to help you with this process. Finally, remember to enjoy the journey. Take a deep breath, know that you don't need to have it all figured out right now, and it's a process.

The summer is a great time to set yourself apart from other students and get involved in something you can add to your college applications. There are several different opportunities available to students. Whether it’s taking a summer class for enrichment, or attending a summer camp, to working, volunteering or participating in a sport or internship. Learn about the SDSU Nursing Program - March 9
SDSU Breakthrough Nursing is hosting a virtual career presentation for PUSD students on March 9th 4pm. This student nursing organization presented to our students last year and they have a ton of great information to share. No sign-up is necessary, just use the Zoom link below to join.

Career Presentation on Skilled Trades - March 16
Titans, are you interested in getting a job immediately after high school? If you are considering this path, let's start thinking about your future job now so you're prepared when it's time to graduate. What does it take to get a job immediately after graduating Poway High? How can you become successful at earning a livable wage? ABC, Associated Builders and Contractors, is a local organization with many skilled trade opportunities. They will be on-campus at our next Thursday Trade Day, March 16th at lunch in the Titan Center, to talk about the requirements to get hired. Sheet Metal Job Fair - March 16
Sheet Metal of San Diego Career Fair is on Thursday, March 16 from 3PM to 5PM. Meet representatives from companies in the San Diego area and find out more about job opportunities in welding and HVAC. Army Intelligence Career Virtual Open House - March 16
The United States Army invites families to their Army Intelligence Career Pathway – Virtual Open House on Thursday, March 16th from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. The virtual open house will feature the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, a multi-service school for active and reserve components, foreign military students, and civilian personnel working in the federal government and various law enforcement agencies. The agenda will include a deep dive into Army Intelligence, including careers in Drone Pilot, Intelligence Analyst,Geospatial Intelligence Imagery Analyst, Human Intelligence Collector, Signals Intelligence Analyst, and Signals Intelligence Voice Interceptor.

Mini College Fair - March 17
We will host a mini college fair on Friday, March 17 at lunch in front of the Titan Center with about 15 out-of-state universities. RACC Regional Admission Counselors of California represent universities outside of California and work closely with high schools and community colleges across the state. Some of the colleges offer the WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) College Savings Program. This program offers California residents discounts in tuition. Stop by a table and speak with an admissions representatives about a university you're interested in or a college you've never heard of and learn something new. It's a great opportunity for students in all grade levels to hear a brief rundown of different universities. You never know, it might turn out to be a perfect fit for you. Not to mention, you could save on college tuition with the WUE College Savings Program. Read more about the WUE here.
UCSD Summer Pre-College Program for Marine and Life Sciences - March 17
UC San Diego's Division of Extended Studies is offering Life Sciences and Marine Science summer courses. Their courses offer pre-college credits and let students study at a top research university. The application is live on the UCSD website, along with a scholarship application. As of right now there is no deadline for the course application, as students are accepted on a rolling basis. The scholarship application closes on March 17th.

San Diego State University's Nursing Department will have an Intro to Nursing event, Nursing Revealed, on Saturday, March 25th, 2023. Check-In begins at 9:30AM at the Adams Humanities Building at SDSU. Event Begins at 10:00AM – 3:00PM. The Fall 2023 class schedule will be available on April 10, 2023. Please schedule an Educational Planning appointment with a Palomar Admissions Counselor during the month of April. You MUST have a Palomar Student ID Number to schedule an appointment.
Before scheduling your Educational Planning Appointment, Palomar College would like students to complete the Education Planning Checklist for New Students and review the Palomar Pathways Mapper.

- The San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship program provides scholarship opportunities for local students to help pursue their educational goals and achieve their higher education dreams. The deadline is March 8, 2022 by 2pm PST (This is a firm deadline time).
- California Retired Teachers Scholarship Foundation application deadline is March 10, 2023. High school senior interested in studying Education.
- Women in Construction - Deadline is March 11, 2023
- Hispanic Scholarship Fund - Deadline is March 15, 2023

SAY SOMETHING WEEK, March 20 -24
SAY SOMETHING WEEK, March 20 - 24, is a program dedicated to raising awareness for students and staff on how to identify warning signs and get help for individuals before they hurt themselves or others. The goal of SAY SOMETHING is to teach us how to keep people safe by following these steps:
Look for warning signs and threats
Act immediately and take signs and threats seriously
Say Something to a trusted adult or use one of the anonymous PUSD numbers, below, to report
PUSD Safety Tipline 1-844-PUSD-TIP (1-844-787-3847)
This tipline is for situations requiring immediate attention, including threats of school violence or suicide, and/or weapons on campus. The PUSD Tipline is monitored by local law enforcement.
Safe Schools Hotline (1-858-668-4161)
This hotline is for reporting concerns of bullying (cyber, physical, verbal, etc.), drug or alcohol activity, either on or off campus, and any other parental or student concerns. This hotline is only monitored during District office hours. It is not monitored during weekends, nights, or school holidays.

CRF Audits Start Soon - March 14
Course Request Form (CRF) audits start on March 14. At this time, counselors will meet with each student to talk about requested courses for the next school year. If you have NOT turned in your CRF, please take your completed and signed CRF to the Counseling Office ASAP.
