Fostering a Kind Environment
As we wrapped up National Bullying Prevention Month in October, students across grade levels shifted from discussing bullying prevention strategies and focusing on how to create an environment of kindness.
Over the next few weeks, SEL lessons across grade levels will focus on discovering shared interests, relationship skills amongst peers and friends, and creating classwide and school-wide environments that are kind and welcoming.
Students will share a bit about themselves with their classmates and work to
discover what they have in common with one another. They will also learn that both similarities and differences are valued, and how to navigate situations where differences can get in the way of cooperation. Students will discuss what it means to belong to a group and explore the elements that make our school a community.
An important part of this program is for students to continue discussing and practicing concepts outside the classroom. Feel free to reinforce this at home and ask your child about these concepts!

Helping Kids Identify Their Feelings
See the short article below for some tips on how to have conversations to help you better understand what your child is feeling:
Feelings Charts
Try using this chart with your child. Begin by sharing what you're feeling (1-3 feelings) and saying why. For example, "I'm tired because I had a long day at work, and I'm happy because you gave me a hug when I picked you up from school." Then, ask your child to do the same. Remember to let your child know it's okay to feel any of the feelings including the more negative ones.
