WLWV School Board Briefs
June 11, 2018
The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a public meeting on Monday, June 11. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
Board Approves the 2018-19 Budget
"I want to say thank you, Doug, and thank you to your entire staff for the incredible amount of work that went into putting this budget together," said Vice Chair Chelsea Martin. "I have the utmost confidence in your team and in this budget you have prepared for our district."
School Board Reviews Integrated Pest Management Plan
Director Woodley noted that the district has reduced chemical use by approximately 80 percent since 2012. He added that the district applies, at most, one application per year at each school. The district uses an adopted and approved list of herbicides that are compliant with Oregon law for use on public school grounds, which is developed and published by Oregon State University. Director Woodley said the district uses targeted sprays of herbicides when necessary to tackle problem areas in cracks in district asphalt, along fence lines where it's difficult to hand-weed, and when overgrown areas create large bee populations that endanger students. The district excludes the use of pesticides for purely aesthetic purposes (Policy EBB).
Board Chair Ginger Fitch thanked community members for sharing their concerns with the Board, and district staff for explaining the IPM Plan. She noted that she has spent time in recent weeks speaking with Integrated Pest Management experts, researching surrounding districts, and communicated with concerned community members. Other Board Members shared their recent research regarding the topic, coming to the conclusion that the district's current practice has students' best interest in mind, leaning heavily on the expertise of Oregon State University and other leading experts.
