SHOOTS THEN HAWAIIAN
The fall of the Hawaiian Kingdom
THESIS
The Hawaiian Kingdom during January 17, 1893 wouldn't have been overthrown if it wasn't for the duties of President McKinley, President Cleveland, and Minister John L. Stevens.
President William Mckinley
President William McKinley served as the 25th president of the United States. President McKinley signed a bill to annex the Hawaiian Islands during July 7, 1898. McKinley would pressure state senators to approve the annexation. An annexation resolution supported by McKinley made it all the way up the house of representatives on May 4, 1898. The senate passed the annexation on July 6. President McKinley signed it a day after. The United States took possession of the Hawaiian Islands on August 12, 1898.
President Grover Cleveland
President Cleveland served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. President Cleveland assigned James Blount as a investigator. Cleveland's job was to investigate what is happening in the Hawaiian Kingdom. Cleveland was an anti-imperialist. Cleveland responded to the Hawaiians' protest against the overthrow. Cleveland left office a couple years after the annexation President William McKinley took his place.
Minister John L. Stevens
Minister John L. Stevens was the U.S. minister of Hawai'i in 1893. He had special orders for U.S. marines and U.S. sailors to head to the kingdom of Hawai'i. Committee of Safety felt like there was a threat on American lives. He was accused of abusing his power. Stevens wanted Queen Liliuokalani to regain her power. President Sanford Dole refused to give power back to the queen.
CONCLUSION
All of these people were very important, they were a big role of the overthrow and annexation of Hawaii. These things were important because it was a crazy way that showed how the United States solved some problems. Without this, we wouldn't be here. Who knows how Hawaii would be..
