Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in association with the United States. Puerto Rico has authority over its internal affairs. The Executive Power is exercised by the Governor, who leads a cabinet conformed by the heads of the departments. Puerto Rico has 8 senatorial districts, 40 representative districts, and 78 municipalities.


The unit of money in Puerto Rico is United States dollars. Both U.S. paper money as well as coins are the standard currency across the entire island. Puerto Rico was included in the commemorative 50 State Quarters program run by the U.S. Since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the U.S., Puerto Rico relies on the U.S. government.
