WHPE March Update

Spring is coming!

Educator Effectiveness and Student Learning Objectives

October 31st 2014 is the deadline for all teachers to submit their student learning objectives (SLO's) for the 2014-15 school year. To help you prepare for this process, understand what constitutes a SMART SLO, and to answer some common questions regarding the Educator Effectiveness (EE) process, WHPE created a video resource for you. Thank you to Eileen Hare, DPI Physical Education and Health Consultant, Dr. Kristi Mally (UW-LAX), and past WHPE president Crystal Gorwitz (whose school has been a pilot school for EE) who share their knowledge and experience of EE and SLO's in the video.

You can access the DPI's expository of examples for student learning objectives and find the student learning objective template here

Problem Solving in Team Games - Play the Joker!

Here's a way to add strategic twists into team games - simply use these Joker cards. Students can select a Joker card at random or at intervals set by the teacher. They will then need to adjust their strategy accordingly to meet the demands of the card.
Students who are "eliminated" from the game can complete an aligned activity or question before being allowed to rejoin the activity. Thanks to Callum Jackson (@CJackson_PE) for sharing this resource

Teacher Hacks - the little stuff that goes a long way!

We all have our own tips and tricks to entice learning , add a new twist to an activity, or help organize equipment. With Teacher Hacks I hope to share some of the things WHPE members are doing with their classes. Please email me if you have any you would like to share.

Check out this month's featured Teacher Hacks below!

Teacher Hack 1: Dot Badminton by Ken Smith

Add a poly spot to each side of a badminton court. Players must touch the spot after each hit. The team that loses gets to move the winners spot

Teacher Hack 2: Gamification Bowling by Chuck Brehm

Students start with one pin - for every strike, they earn another pin. The goal is to get up to 10 pins. You could vary this by adding a fitness activity to be completed after each strike.
