DPM Newsletter - 3.17.23
Friday, March 17, 2023
Dear DPM Families,
This week was filled with fierce competition during our Battle of the Books against four other area schools. We had three teams of students competing this year. Congratulations to all participants! The students must read a series of Rebecca Caudill winners and then answer questions about the book as quickly as possible! It’s super fun to watch if you’ve never seen a “Battle” before! We want to publicly thank our amazing librarian, Patti Fleser, who has hosted over 15 Battle of the Book events for Deer Path. She’s retiring this year, so this will be the last, but her legacy will live on in our student’s love for books. Thank you, Patti!!
As we enter the last week before Spring Break we want to highlight the great work being completed in our literacy pilot. Our teachers have been working hard to provide an enriching experience for your children, while learning a new program in order to provide feedback on the best reading program to fit our students' needs. Some amazing things that we’re seeing include writing daily in response to texts, vocabulary challenges, reading engaging topics, and using discussions as assessment in a Socratic seminar. For example, the Socratic seminars that Dr. Kellie Kopach hosted in her ELA class have been outstanding. All students are participating at a high level, sharing thoughts so deep that even the adults in the room are learning and reflecting, and using rich text evidence driving the conversation!
Happy St. Patrick's Day, and we hope you have a safe and relaxing Spring Break, Deer Path!
Sincerely,
Megan Eigenrauch, 5/6 Principal
Sam Paulsen, 7/8 Principal

Literacy Pilot Update for Families
Over the past several weeks, we have been engaging in our literacy pilot. Want to learn how it’s going? Check it out HERE!
Spring Break 2023 Calendar Reminder - March 27-31
This is a reminder that Spring Break is March 27-31.
Attendance matters. Even when an absence is excused, it is still legally considered an absence by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). To move our ISBE summative designation from Commendable to Exemplary, we must continue to focus on academics - and make sure absenteeism stays low.
Attendance directly before and after Spring Break is strongly encouraged.
If your student must be absent for additional dates before or after the scheduled break, we are asking that you notify the attendance office before your travels. Once you have notified the attendance office you will not need to call in the absences on a daily basis.
Families can contact the 5/6 Attendance Office via email at dpmattendance56@lfschools.net or via phone at 847-234-6013, and our 7/8 Attendance Office at dpmattendance78@lfschools.net or via phone at 847-234-6014.
Spring ISA and IAR Testing
ISA for 5th Grade Starts Tuesday
Our DPM 5th graders will be taking the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) starting Tuesday, March 21 through Thursday, March 23 during science class.
Please remind your child to charge their iPad and to bring headphones to school each day. Encourage your child to eat a hearty breakfast and get plenty of sleep to do their best on testing! Thank you for your partnership!
IAR Week of April 11th for 5th-8th
The IAR (Illinois Assessment of Readiness) is the state assessment and accountability measure for Illinois students enrolled in a public school district. IAR assesses the New Illinois Learning Standards Incorporating the Common Core and will be administered in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. IAR participation rates are used by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) when calculating ELA, math, and science proficiency scores. We must have 95 percent participation in all areas to receive the maximum points possible. Schools that have less than 95 percent participation are ineligible to receive an Exemplary designation.

Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project
The City of Lake Forest is beginning construction on the Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project - located at the Lake Forest Recreation Center, behind Deer Path Middle School. The project involves installing synthetic turf athletic fields and additional amenities for the community park. The majority of construction activities will be confined to the project site, which includes Deerpath Community Park fields and tennis courts behind DPM. The City has been extremely collaborative and intentionally timed the launch of this work to be the least disruptive by scheduling start during the week DPM is closed over Spring Break. The contractor will also work to limit activity during pickup and dropoff times at the school. For reasons of safety, drivers are asked to follow all directional signage. Please note that the fields behind DPM will not be used by our students during construction. Outdoor activities will be diverted to other DPM outdoor spaces. We appreciate your patience. More information about the Deerpath Community Park Improvement Project may be found at http://www.cityoflakeforest.com/DeerpathPark
