Winter Park Band Notes
November 5, 2017
From Mr. Blackmer
Congratulations to the "Sound of the Wildcats" on their straight "superior" rating at Marching Band MPA! I am extremely proud of their work and dedication toward tonight's final and best performance of our West Side Story show! While there were many great comments from the adjudicators, the Marching Band earned all "A" grades in music performance! Thank you to all of our terrific parent chaperones and Operations crew for making today such a success! And thank you to our seniors for making the first quarter of the school year such a great one. Now, work to maintain that high standard for the entire school year!
I want to thank Kathy McCrea for her outstanding support with our two fundraisers - the Sav-a-Round coupon book and the recent Butter Braid pastry sale. Both fundraisers proved to help out many of our Band students keep up with their Band fees! Please remember that the Butter Braid delivery date is Tuesday, November 14 at 7 PM in the Band Room. There will also be an open Band Booster Parent meeting that night at the same time. Mark your calendars now!
Also, many thanks to Mary Bernard, Larisa Bulynin, Brandy Camacho, Julia Carpenter, Lise Fyall, Carrie Henderson, Laura Jackson, Jackie Kuczajda, Melanie Maulfair, Lee McBurney, and Kim Schmitt for cleaning our uniforms for our MPA performance! The students appreciate having clean, fresh uniforms!
Thanks to all of our parents who participated in "Trunk-r-Treat" this past Monday! It was great to see such a large turn-out, and I'm sure that the students appreciated the sugar after a long rehearsal!
I know that everyone (including myself) is looking forward to the schedule slowing down a bit now that the marching band season is complete! However, please be extra attentive to the Band Calendar for the remainder of the school year. The one aspect to not having the same schedule week after week, like we do with marching season, is that it is easy to become complacent with the calendar. Performances and events can sneak up on you because they are much more random. Stay on top of it!
Finally, a reminder that All-County auditions are coming up on Monday, November 13 at Freedom High School. Make sure that you are prepared and ready to perform at your highest potential. The audition schedule for the concert bands can be found HERE. The jazz audition schedule will be coming shortly.
All the Best,
Mr. Blackmer
Play-Off Game UPDATE
As you are aware by now, the varsity football team will be playing in at least one play-off game. However, so that we can be prepared for potential future play-off game scenarios, please see the following schedule:
Definite Game at Showalter Field
- Friday, November 10, 7:30 PM
Possible Games at Showalter Field (if football team wins game on 11/10)
- Friday, November 17, 7:30 PM
- Friday, November 24, 7:30 PM
Please e-mail Mr. Blackmer AND Mr. Clemente by Monday, November 6 (TOMORROW) if there is a scheduling conflict with any of the above games.
Band Booster Parent Meeting (11/14)
There will be a Band Booster Parent meeting on Tuesday, November 14, to discuss details of our next big Door-2-Door fundraiser, as well as other upcoming events. The meeting will be less than one hour and we need to see all of our parents there!
We need volunteers to drive students for Door-2-Door Saturday, February 3! All Band students are required to participate, and parent volunteers receive financial credit for their student’s Band account! More details to come at the meeting on November 14.
Solo & Ensemble MPA Registration
Registration for the 2018 Solo & Ensemble MPA is now open! Registration will be done through a Google Form found HERE. All events require a separate registration, and all registrations are due by Wednesday, November 15. Any Guard students or those wishing to enter a jazz combo should speak to Mr. Clemente directly before the November 15 deadline.
Remember that all Band students are required to prepare either a solo and/or ensemble, although they are not required to do S&E MPA. Those students who choose to not do MPA should prepare a solo and/or ensemble (following the same requirements as those doing MPA) and sign-up for the S&E Recitals the week of February 5, 2018.
As has been done for the past few years, solo & ensemble music can be purchased through the Band Program if requested by Wednesday, December 6. To request a specific piece of music, complete the Google Form found HERE.
In addition, Beethoven & Co. will be holding two music perusal nights in Orange County in November. The first is at Lake Nona High School on Thursday, November 16 from 4 PM - 8 PM, and the second is at Apopka High School on Monday, November 27 from 3 PM - 6 PM. In both cases, you will be able to "bill" any music selected to the Winter Park Band account that night and take the music with you. Just make sure that you have your student picture ID to prove that you're from Winter Park High School.
