BEAT THE WINTER BLUES
5 WAYS TO HELP YOUR TEEN TAKE CARE OF THEIR MENTAL HEALTH
- Help your teen get out and move! Movement improves mood, so get that body moving! Take a walk, have a dance party, whatever it is that gets your teen moving, get out there and do it!
- Help your teen stick to a sleep schedule. Having a regular routine of bedtime and wake time is incredibly helpful in the ebbs and flows of one's mood. Put those electronics away at least an hour before bed and help your teen get the shut eye they need.
- Laugh out loud! Laughter releases chemicals in your brain that fight feelings of sadness. Help your teen laugh by watching a funny movie together or some funny Tik Toks. Do something to help them get the giggles!
- Help your teen keep a to-do list! It is incredibly easy to feel overwhelmed when you aren't feeling like yourself. Making a manageable list can help your teen feel accomplished as they check things off.
- Eat healthy meals and snacks! It is easy to want to indulge in junk food with lots of sugar, but providing your teen with healthy options will prevent the after-sugar slump and feed their brain the nutrients it needs.
As always, if you believe this is more than the passing "winter blues", do not hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician or one of us.
PERSONAL GRADUATION PLANS
8TH GRADE (FUTURE 9TH GRADE)
WWJH 8th graders have been working on a rough draft of their Personal Graduation Plans (PGPs) and a starting place for their high school course planning. Please take the time to talk with your student about their choices as they work through this process. You will have the opportunity to approve of and sign off on their choices prior to finalization.
Next Steps:
There will be an Eagle Celebration (magnet night) at Richardson High School on January 17th at 6:30 pm. Parents can attend to learn more about RHS magnet programs and other campus opportunities.
Online Applications to RHS magnet programs open on January 17th and close January 31st.
RHS Magnet Interviews will be held February 11th and February 18th
RHS counselors will be coming to visit with your student on Tuesday, February 21st and/or Wednesday, February 22nd to discuss 9th grade courses. Students will review their 9th grade courses from their PGPs with their RHS counselor and make any adjustments needed to the 9th grade course selections.
Notifications will be sent March 3-10th.
Please make sure to visit the 8th grade page on the Westwood Counseling Corner to review information in regards to your student’s transition from junior high to high school.
You can also visit the Richardson High School Counseling page where information about 9th grade will be updated regularly.
We know this is an exciting and important time in your child’s life. We are excited to partner with you as they prepare for their next step in their educational journey.
PRE-REGISTRATION
7TH GRADE (FUTURE 8TH)
We will be visiting with our 7th grade students over the next several weeks and discussing their options for 8th grade classes. Please talk with your students about which classes they would like to take. There are several opportunities for 8th grade students to obtain high school credit (Spanish, French, Health, CCR, etc.). This can be a great option in order to allow for additional electives in high school. We look forward to helping our 7th graders become the new leaders of our Wolf pack!
