Curriculum News
On our February Curriculum Day we were able to keep the main focus on putting our curriculum into BYOC and have a completed course by the end of the day. The science teachers met to discuss the Next Generation Science Standards. For the elementary, these standards break down what is to be covered by each grade and guides our curriculum so we are not covering the same topic in multiple grade levels. During this discussion we were able to look at the standards together and have a clear picture of what is to be covered at each grade level. Having the time to collaborate makes this process smoother as we move forward to align our curriculum with the new standards. At the end of the day building principals were able to meet with teachers to see if the goal was met. I am glad to report that we were right on target for the goal of having one course completed.
At the Wisconsin Forward Exam training they pointed out that it is very important to ensure that teachers are teaching to the curriculum and not to the test, as teaching to the test narrows the focus of instruction to only that content covered by the test. As we look at ways to prepare our students for success on the Forward Exam we need time to work on curriculum here at Flambeau.
Here is a link for a practice test for the Forward Exam if you would like to see what kind of questions the students have on the test.

Parent Resources
This month we are focusing on science resources. If you are unable to access the internet or are in need of different resources please feel free to contact your child’s teacher. We will make every effort to supply you with the materials and knowledge needed for our child to succeed.
Some GREAT websites for science:
Khan Academy: (K-12) Use this site to learn new concepts or review. It is a free website that allows students to create their own account and monitor progress. These disciplines are available on this site: Physics, Cosmology & Astronomy, Chemistry, Biology, Health & Medicine, Electrical Engineering.
Mendel’s Peas: (8-12) Older students studying inheritance in biology will be able to explore the study of genetics the same way the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel, did in the mid nineteenth century. It gives students a sense of the thought that Mendel put into his work and the reward he felt when figuring it out.
https://www2.edc.org/weblabs/Mendel/MendelMenu.html
Minnesota Zoo Matchmaker: (8-12) Allows students to breed tigers for different characteristics in a domesticated type setting. This site is great practice for students learning to use genetic tools such as Punnett Squares and is entertaining to keep them engaged.

Common Sense Education: This site contains links to thirty-one science related educational websites. Many are free and each link is labeled for the appropriate grade levels. So if your looking for something other than what we have listed already give this site a try.

Reading Week at Flambeau was once again another huge success! Students participated in color dress up days throughout the week, the favorite day being Whacky-Mismatched Day on Friday! Friday is also Dr. Seuss' birthday, so much of our activities have centered around him and his books. Middle School students were thrilled to share their love for reading by “buddy-reading” with our elementary students and the guessing games began in each classroom as mystery readers were revealed. The book swap each morning drew many students to line their shelves with new books to read and WIN time was designated for elementary students to play reading games.
A huge thank –you goes out to Mrs. Bratanich, Mrs. Ellwanger, and Mrs. Verdegan for their dedication to this eventful week! Your hard work is much appreciated!

Student Spotlight
This month I want to recognize our Middle School Forensics Team. Our team has been working hard on their performances and competed last night at DeLong Middle School in Eau Claire. But the reason I want to recognize them is for their above-and-beyond effort to teach our younger students about what a Forensics team does. As a part of Reading Week, Mrs. Stewart and the team taught our Elementary students about what they do, their process, and even shared their performances with the kids.
Students teaching other students provides an amazing learning opportunity. I am always so thankful to work with such a great group of kids that are so willing to share their skills and talents. Great job team!

St. Patrick’s day is just around the corner. With that in mind I went looking for something green. I came up with a pistachio dessert. This recipe was submitted by a student’s mother, Tonya Mateski.
Pistachio Dessert
50 crushed Ritz crackers
½ c. melted butter
2 -4 oz. pkgs. instant pistachio pudding
1 ½ c milk
1 qt. vanilla ice cream
1 – 8 oz. tub Cool Whip
1 Heath bar
Combine crushed crackers and melted butter. Pat into ungreased 9 x 13” pan. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes. Let cool. Combine pudding and milk; beat with rotary beater until well blended. Fold in softened ice cream. Spread over cooled crust. Spread with Cool Whip. Sprinkle grated Heath bar on top. Refrigerate.
This would make a great green dessert for your St. Patty’s Day celebration.
March 27th is Flambeau Schools Celebration of Learning. Come to the small gym that evening between 4:00 and 6:00pm. for a free meal. We will be serving soup and a sandwich that evening. We look forward to seeing everyone!
Also, please remember that it is never too late to turn in that free or reduced lunch application. If your family has had a change in circumstances and you feel you may qualify now even if you did not qualify earlier in the school year, you may re-apply.
And here is a little Irish blessing for you all;
May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may trouble avoid you wherever you go.
