Shimek Shout Out
September 1, 2017
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
What a wonderful start to the 2017-2018 school year we have had! It has been so nice seeing all the smiling faces throughout the day. We kicked off our year with a fantastic PBIS assembly where we reviewed the expectations for the common areas of our building (bathrooms, hallways, lunchroom, assembly, and playground). Students answered trivia questions for the chance to take on teachers in minute-to-win-it challenges. It was a very memorable way to review the expectations and have some fun! If you would like to know more about PBIS and our building expectations, feel free to contact me or your student’s classroom teacher.
Looking ahead to the month of September, we have several events to note: our Parent Teacher Organization will hold its first meeting, Back to School Nights, picture day, the ICCSD Foundation will sponsor Dine Out for Education, and voting is open for our school board and the General Obligation Bond. Also, there is no school on Monday, September 4, in recognition of Labor Day. For more information on these events, please see the descriptions in this newsletter.
We appreciate your continued attention to safety as you drop off and pick up your children each day. Buses have priority. Cars must wait in line to drop off their students, who should exit on the right hand side. Parents walking in with their children should park and then walk together through the parking lot. Students riding bikes should walk them up the street once they turn onto Grissel Place. Please be respectful and thankful of teachers, staff, and Safety Patrol members who are helping to keep things moving quickly and safely each day.
Thank you to all of our parents and families for your support throughout the year! Have a wonderful weekend!

City High Fall sports information
Welcome back to a new year. As we did last year, we are hoping to have a strong showing of our elementary and junior high students at our fall volleyball and football games. Just a couple of items:
VOLLEYBALL
- September 5th, September 18th, September 26th, and October 10th
- In addition, the September 5th match is the annual “Battle for the Spike” against West High!
FOOTBALL
As we have done the last several years, the 'Hill' area will be closed to traffic. The elementary and junior high students will have a section of our bleachers where they can sit.
Elementary and junior high students also need a responsible adult to come into the game with them. This could be one adult with a small group of kids, but parents cannot just drop off their kids. This is not a change from past practice, just more enforced this year. PLEASE make sure your students are aware of this.
We will be hosting the annual "Battle for the Boot" vs West High this year. Date for the game is September 15th.
Other home football nights:
- September 1st, September 22nd, September 29th, October 20th
Thank you for your support of our athletic programs. All of your littlest hawks will be little hawks soon and I am hoping to continue to build a strong bond between us all on the East side.
