Quote of the week
The Impotance of Mindset
I have placed a great message in your box about "Mindset". This was shared with all Principals at our meeting on Thursday. As you read through it, I want you to really think about your "Mindset". Do you have a fixed or growth "Mindset"? I think it is extremely important for you to understand where your "Mindset" lies. This understanding could lead you down a path of greater growth or a path of realizing that growth is possible for you.
I come from a growth "Mindset". I am always looking to grow and obtain as many skills and/or tools that will allow me or those around me to become successful. I have had to work for anything and everything I have, and I do my best to instill that "Mindset" in my own children as well as anyone else I can influence.
I am believe that it is important to instill a "Mindset" of growth in our students. One of the things that resonated with me the most from the information was that, "It is important to praise the process, not the talent or ability."
The quote above is one that I absolutely believe in and live out every day of my life. I hope you enjoy the article.

EPMS 2016-2017 SIP Flash
1. We will increase the number of students at or above Lexile levels on the Universal Screener.
When we began the school year, from data pulled from GA Milestone results, 26% of our students began the year reading below their current grade level. The breakdown is below:
6th grade - 78 of 293 students
7th grade - 90 of 276 students
8th grade - 59 of 302 students
We are continuing to look for those reading strategies embedded within your lessons during observations.
2. We will increase the number of students who score proficient or higher by 10% on the EMBRACER writing protocol.
I can remember being in school and absolutely hating when my teachers made me write. However, I am now so very grateful for those experiences. It has also been proven that students retain more information when they write about that information. Having students journal about what they have learned in your class is a great way to place on emphasis on writing within content areas or standards in which it is more difficult to embed writing opportunities.
We will continue to look for those writing opportunities embedded within your lessons during observations.
3. We will decrease the amount of students in all grades who fail 2 or more classes for the EOY average.
Ultimately, this isn't about grades. Ultimately, this is about responsibility and accountability. Our job within this goal is to guide our students to owning their responsibilities as students. Most students are there...the few that are not are our focus. We can't allow the struggles they have outside of our building affect how we support them inside our building.

Don't Scroll Past This
The images below are have been on the previous two newsletters, and that should tell you something. While we have not provided a strict PL focus on differentiation this year, we are still wanting everyone to continue to improve.
Some of you have a great handle on differentiation while some of you still struggle. If you find yourself implementing "differentiation" from the top image, you need to rethink your strategy.
If you are within the bottom image with your differentiation, that's great! Keep it up, but continue to plan, practice, and grow.
Remember to ask yourself these 3 questions:
1. What is the need?
2. How did I identify it?
3. What will I do to address it?
