Why??

July 1 to July 3, 1863. General Robert E. Lee marched his Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania in late June 1863.Part of the Union side in this battle. Th confederates attacked first. It was fought to stop Robert E lee.

What happened

It was significance because it stopped Robert E lee from attacking the Union fro the second time. it was the bloodiest battle of the war and it ended in three days.

A letter from a general officer writing to his wife about the war of Gettysburg. In this letter it says this war is a bloody battle. That there rebels giving them an everlasting thrash. He talks about how yesterday was the worst day. Him and the whole army fought against them. How they lost 100 men in 10 minutes of this day. On of his best man's killed at first sight. He and his army will miss him. Another thing he talks about in this letter is about how they fired bombs at him. Telling how he layed on the ground for two hours, scared to death.

Events of the war

1) The First Day’s battle was a much larger engagement than is generally portrayed.

2)The Second Day’s Battle was the largest and costliest of the three days.

3)Of 120 generals present at Gettysburg, nine were killed or mortally wounded during the battle.

4) On the third day confederate General Robert E. Lee last attempt at breaking the Union lines ends in a disastrous failure, bringing the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end.
