Cape's Mission & Vision
Vision: We believe that the most promising strategy for achieving the mission of Cape Elementary is to develop our capacity to function as a professional learning community.
Dear Cape Elementary Families,
Welcome to the new school year! The first three weeks of school were a time for learning new faces, new routines and new teachers. We are proud of our students, staff and parents for a successful and smooth opening. Thank you for making Cape Elementary an amazing place to be. We look forward to a wonderful year together.
We welcomed 100 new Kindergarten families and over 40 new students across the other grades. Our PTO and our volunteer coordinator are ready to recruit new members for our many fun and exciting events that are scheduled this year. Please consider giving your time to help! This is a great way to meet other parents and to be part of the school’s support system.
As we strive for excellence, we welcome your involvement. Communication is vital to student success and to our overall growth and sense of community. To increase communication between home and school, we are requiring all parents to sign the planner each night and our teachers to sign each day. Please take time to read the Student-Parent Handbook in the back of the planner and also to peruse our school calendar. We also encourage you to visit our website, follow us on Twitter and Facebook along with reading teacher communication that comes each Friday or Monday in the brown envelope.
As children grow and learn, they find joy and satisfaction in working closely with their families and school toward a common goal. Such is the case with the students at Cape Elementary. Commitment to putting forth the best for our children on the part of parents, students and staff is the key to success with the children we teach. It is the hope of the staff that all parents will help us fulfill this commitment to excellence on behalf of ALL Cape kids. School and home partner together to build skills and knowledge, reinforce values, and develop a strong sense of self-worth. We must invest our time and energies in our nation’s most valuable resource - our children.
Sincerely,
Ms. Osterholm and Mrs. Sund

Dads Take Your Child to School Day 2019
Wednesday, September 25, 2019 will be the annual statewide observance of this event. This initiative highlights the significant positive impact that fathers and father figures have in a child's life.
Attendance Matters....Did You Know?
Parents/Guardians are important partners in student attendance, so we appreciate all your help in ensuring good attendance.
- Parents/Guardians can help students arrive on time to school, attend regularly and have a good bedtime schedule.
- Research shows missing 10% of school or 18 days negatively impacts student academic learning.
- A chronic absence (unexcused or excused absence) pattern is missing school two or more days in a month.
- Please communicate with your school social worker if your child is experiencing any barriers to attendance. We are happy to help in any way we can.
Have a great school year!
August/September Counseling Corner
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year at Cape Elementary! This year we provided 50 backpacks for students to kick off the school year with the help of our community partners Cape Coral First United Methodist Church and Bill Cochran of Sullivan State Farm Insurance. Thank you to everyone who supported this project to make sure every student had what he or she needed to start the year off right. If you are in need of a backpack or supplies for school, please stop by the front office. We still have backpacks and supplies available.
Cape Elementary is a Positive Behavior Interventions & Support school. We are looking forward to offering a school-wide SOAR celebration each quarter and classroom incentives for students who follow our school SOAR expectations.
The district-wide character word for September is ACCEPTANCE. This involves the recognition of the diversity of others, their opinions, practices, and culture with a favorable reception. The Quote for the month: “Strength lies in differences, not in similarities.” ~ Stephen Covey
At our SOAR kick-off this year, one of the areas I covered with our intermediate grades was the difference between peer conflict and bullying. As the school counselor, one of my responsibilities is to help individuals with differences come together to see uncomfortable situations through the other person’s eyes. In many situations, peer conflict can be resolved by each person practicing tolerance. Many times, once an individual is able to recognize that a disagreement stems from diversity and is able to accept another person’s varying viewpoint, conflict can be resolved. Acceptance does not equal allowing harmful divergent viewpoints to marginalize a people group. It involves recognizing that which is true, respectful and the best of what brings us together as humans.
We are careful not to label instances of peer conflict as bullying as there are specific criteria that must be met for a behavior to be classified as bullying. In situations where bullying has been identified, one of the biggest ways to support an individual who has been targeted is to help that student realize that they are valued and to find his/her voice. No one deserves to be bullied. Correcting the aggressor’s bullying behavior requires intervention and appropriate consequences. Our goal is to teach tolerance. Tolerance fosters acceptance. It is important to remember to focus on correcting negative behaviors and encouraging children to get along with all kinds of people.
Schools are required to investigate all reports of bullying. Bullying Complaint Report Forms can be found by following the “Parent Portal” link to the “Anti-Bullying” heading at www.leeschools.net or by contacting your child’s teacher, school administration or the school counselor. Every student should feel safe and valued at school. Thank you for joining with us to ensure student success at Cape Elementary.
National Bullying Prevention Month is right around the corner. We will be kicking off a month of activities with Blue Shirt Day – World Day of Bullying Prevention, an initiative of STOMP Out Bullying, on Monday, October 7. All students and staff at Cape Elementary are encouraged to wear a blue shirt on this day to show our commitment to bullying prevention at Cape Elementary. A calendar of anti-bullying events will also be coming home with your student in October.

When it comes to early childhood health, early diagnosis of common issues can have a monumental impact on the life of the child. For hearing and vision, regular screenings during the development years can lead to an early diagnosis for a healthier, happier life. Cape Elementary vision and hearing screenings will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 8:30 AM for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade. Grades 1 & 3 will also be measured for height and weight. Vision and hearing referrals will be sent home if there is a need for further care or correction.
