NAPLAN Online in 2019
What does this mean to Year 3 and 5 students at HRSS?
Highland Reserve State School
NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment due to an adaptive design, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. Assessments will use an adaptive ‘tailored test design’, which gives students questions better suited to their achievement level. This form of testing will help teachers customise their teaching more specifically to student needs.
Following work with, and support from our Regional Team, in Term 4 HRSS will undertake a technical readiness test. This will ensure our school has the technical requirements for the online assessment. Students in Year 2 and Year 4 will need to download the NAP locked down browser prior to Term 4.

Q & A
A. Moving NAPLAN online allows for better and more varied assessment tasks and a personalised test experience. It also means your child’s results will be more precise and available to you within a couple of weeks, rather than several months.
Q. When is it happening?
The Education Council, comprising state, territory and commonwealth education ministers, agreed that NAPLAN online would be implemented throughout Australia from 2017 over a 2-to 3 year period.
Around 15 000 Queensland students completed NAPLAN online in 2018. Highland Reserve SS will be amongst more than 200 schools undertaking the assessment online 2019. As of 2020 all schools will complete NAPLAN online, rather than on paper.
Q. What devices will HRSS use?
As many of our Year 2 and Year 4 students have been using their own iPads throughout 2018, students in Year 3 and Year 5 will use either their own iPads or school owned iPads to complete the national assessment in 2019. Students in Year 2 and Year 4 will need to download the NAP locked down browser prior to Term 4, which is when our school will undertake a technical readiness test. Further information about this to come, though the browser can be accessed from - https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/nap-locked-down-browser/id1086807255?mt=8
Q. If my child wants to, are they able to complete the test in hard copy?
As a school, we have opted to do NAPLAN online in 2019. This means that all tests apart from Year 3 writing will be done on the internet. Students are able to plan their writing on paper, or they can plan digitally.
Q. Are our children ready?
Completing digital tasks and digital assessment is part of what students at HRSS do on a regular basis. Our children are ready.
Q. Can I help my child prepare?
NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the online test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. Parents can also familiarise themselves with the testing experience by using the public demonstration site available at www.nap.edu.au
