Home of the Dragons
Dear Duveneck Families,
With three weeks left in the school, our district is beginning to pivot towards the planning for reopening the new school year. At last night's school board meeting, our Superintendent, Dr. Don Austin, shared three possible scenarios. The first (and most unlikely) is that we will reopen as any normal school year, without restrictions. The second (most likely) option is that we reopen with distance restrictions, utilizing a blend of in person and online learning. The third scenario, (least desirable), is that schools will open using only distance learning platforms. How we move forward will be contingent on directives and guidance from the state and county officials.
Despite the uncertainty, the district has begun planning for each of the three scenarios. This week, teachers were invited to open forum sessions to ask questions, propose ideas, and collaborate on how Scenarios 2 and 3 might look. Principals and managers are preparing to form smaller task forces to dive deeper into the details and logistics of each possible model. On Monday, May 18th, Superintendent Austin's weekly Backstage with the Superintendent’s webinar will give parents and community members the opportunity to contribute ideas and thoughts regarding the reopening of school. I highly encourage you to attend if you can.
Last night’s school board meeting also had a long presentation and discussion about the current and three year projection of the district’s budget. The financial implications during the COVID 19 school closure has created a deficit of $4-5M for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately, there will be cuts proposed and implemented this year to address this deficit. To become knowledgeable about our district’s budget, please read the report that was presented last night by our CBO, Ms. Carolyn Chow:
If interested, here are important upcoming school board dates that will be focusing on the district’s budget:
· June 9, 2020: Draft 20/21 budget will be presented to the school board
· June 23, 2020: Public hearing will be held & Budget adoption of the 20/21 plan will take place
I am sure that there will be more news to share in the coming weeks and months. While it can easily feel somber, stressful, and overwhelming, remember that we are a resilient community. We will get through these challenges together. I am appreciative of the strong partnership PTA has provided throughout all of this, as well as the many messages of encouragement from individual families. I am grateful for our talented and dedicated staff, who have always kept students at the forefront of our work and conversations.
Let's all continue to take care of one another and keep the lines of communication open. Together, we can do anything!
