Message from Principal Parrish
Happy New Year,
We are excited to begin 2019 by continuing to offer wonderful learning opportunities for your children! We look forward to building on the success that we experienced first semester. Here are a few of our school-wide goals and how you can support your child's learning process.
1. Providing meaningful and personalized learning experiences - Communicate with your child's teacher regularly. Ask questions like "what are my child's strengths?" and "what areas can my child grow in?" If you know of strategies that work with your child or motivational ideas, please share them with your child's teacher.
2. Developing a love of reading - Read with your child regularly. Read for fun in front of your child so that they see there is value in reading. If your child is reading a novel, pick up an extra copy and read along with them. Reread favorite picture books with your children. Let your older children read to your younger children. Visit the local public libraries in our area, Selma and Smithfield both have good libraries. Help your child find books or other reading materials that are of interest to them. Comic books, graphic novels, poems, and trading cards are all examples of great reading material.
Micro Elementary is lucky to have wonderful students, supportive parents, and a welcoming community. Thank you for all that you do to support our school!
Thank you!
Mr. Parrish
Micro Elementary News
- During the week of January 14th, a team from the North Carolina Public Health Dental will be on campus to provide a Sealant Program for students in grades 1st-5th. If you are interested in your child participating in the Sealant Project, contact the front office if you have not already completed the paperwork.
- On Tuesday, January 8th the team will be on campus to provide dental screenings for our kindergarten students. The screening educates children about good dental health and gives them a positive dental experience. This screening also provides data to help improve the NC Children’s Dental Health Program. You will be notified if your child needs care. If you do not want your child to participate in the dental screening, please contact your child’s teacher. Information about both of these programs were sent home back in December.
- Would you like to volunteer? Contact our school counselor, Mandy Yelverton, if you are interested in volunteering. MandyYelverton@johnston.k12.nc.us or 919-588-4300.
Micro Clubs: We have started Student Clubs here at Micro! On early release days and the days before student holidays, we hold club meetings. The clubs are based on student interests. So far we have met once and the clubs seemed to be a hit with our students. Our next club day is January 29th.

Our school has two Wildly Important Goals that we will focus on as a school.
1. Help students develop a love of reading.
2. Provide students with meaningful and personalized learning experiences.
Research shows that students who enjoy reading are more successful in school. We also want to provide our students with "real world" learning experiences that make content come alive.
