Continuous Learning Resources
Considerations:
- Consider alternative options for student work completion, remember most students cannot print and/or scan
- All online resources are expected to be shared through Canvas
- Use videos so your students can see your face, this does make them feel better, see below for more details about recording and sharing videos
- Canvas offers direct share when building curriculum and resources with your PLC
Secondary Continuous Learning Guidance
A guide with suggestions for building online relationships, creating a student/parent-friendly experience on Canvas, etc specifically for secondary teachers.

This page links to all the resources that have been created, resources, emailed, etc. throughout this school shut down.
Setting up an Online Office
Your online office can be as easy as "I am online from 4-5 pm every day and will immediately respond to any emails I receive" or an open video conferencing "office" where you are in the meeting room at the designated time and provide the link for student to join your meeting if they have questions or want to meet with you.
If you choose to do a video conference for your office, Google Meeting rooms have a URL that can be used repeatedly, no need to start a new one every day.
Video Conferencing with Your Student(s)
While Zoom is currently offering free accounts, Google Meet offers similar features without as many of the privacy concerns. See below for the video tool comparison on specific feature options of each tool. It is also recommended that if you use Google Meet you add and share the following extensions with your students to add to Chrome.
Extensions to add:
Nod - Reactions for Google Meet--participants can respond with emojis and raise their hand
Considerations when video conferencing:
- Due to parent work restrictions, technology limitations, and/or time constraints, do not expect all students to be able to attend your meeting. You may want to consider a late afternoon time or schedule multiple optional times. You can also record the meeting and post it to Canvas.
- Don't plan on a long meeting. Limit yourself to 10 minutes, the secondary students could meet for a longer time, but remember they might not be the only one needing the internet and video conferencing takes a lot of bandwidth.
- Set up norms for your meetings; i.e. all muted and must raise a hand to speak (using the Nod Google Extension).
Recording Video
You have several options out there for recording video, we are recommending you to use Screencast-o-matic or WeVideo if you are recording on the computer. You are not limited to just these tools, your cell phone can record video as well.
You also can record simple videos of yourself talking within Canvas and post them on any task or communication. If you want to edit and publish your video, you each have a school YouTube channel where you can publish videos as unlisted and embed on Canvas or email them out.
Considerations when recording video:
- Think of your student's attention spans when recording video, 5-10 minutes is a good rule of thumb, the shorter the better.
- If offering instruction, think about directing the student to pause the video and practice the skill then come back to your video for more instruction.
- Pay attention to your background and the lighting within your video.
