Using Science
King Basilio uses "science" to justify imprisoning his son.
Was King Basilio right or wrong?
King Basilio is a mathematician and an astrologer in the play, LIFE IS A DREAM. He reads horoscopes and interprets astrological signs. During Act One of the play, he himself questions his use of science to imprison Segismundo, his son. He was trying to do the best he could for his country with the knowledge of his day -- 1635.
Make teams: pro-Basilio and anti-Basilio
In small groups, look closely at the text and do research to support Basilio or to speak against his actions. Have a class discussion once teams have backed up their arguments with quotes and facts.
pro-Basilio
The weather was deeply frightening and seemed like evidence. He did he best to protect Segismundo and the country. Better safe than sorry.
The art of persuasion
Tell a personal story. Be funny. Have facts to back up everything you say. Be polite. Say, "Yes, but . . ."
anti-Basilio
No proof that weather = character. Does not give son a fair chance to be healthy and happy. Using drugs to trick Segismundo is completely unethical and indefensible.
