As a reminder, Distance Learning Packet #3 should reduce stress, increase choice, and can be done in fun ways. Distance learning ends on May 22.
We have two boxes on the bench at the front doors for returning books, school materials, etc. You may drop off at any time unless raining, and would prefer weekend drop offs not be done unless on Sunday evening. Registration information should be planned with our Student Records Operator, Kelley Waslewski, kwaslewski@lexington1.net. She is sharing the forms and information digitally to support this process.
Please get those kindergarten and new to first grade registrations in for processing. We want to be sure we have the appropriate number of teachers in place for a focused and joyful start of 2020-2021! Number of students determines the number of teachers so also remind new neighbors to contact us for all grade levels.
If you need anything, please contact us at 821-0302! We are here to support you!
Happy Mother's Day to our many mothers!!!
Yours truly,
Jan Fickling, Principal
Midway Elementary
Welcome New Mustang!! We welcome our new assistant principal, Mrs. Bess Smith, to Midway for the 2020-2021 school year! Welcome, Mrs. Smith!
I am thrilled to be joining the Midway family this upcoming school year! Before joining Midway, I worked in Richland One as a 5th grade teacher for 10 years at Satchel Ford Elementary, and just finished my first year as an Assistant Administrator at Sandel Elementary.
While serving as an Assistant Administrator, I was the lead administrator for grades 4K – 2nd, LEA for IEP and 504 meetings, MTSS Chair, lead administrator for Classified staff evaluations, and CERDEP Director for our 4K program. I also assisted with scheduling, compliance/safety drills, and coordinating efforts for district and state assessments.
During my time in the classroom, I was a cooperating teacher for pre-service educators at both Columbia College and USC. After my second year teaching, I had the opportunity to attend The Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University, where I learned best practices for Writer’s Workshop. After attending The Teacher’s College, I was an ELA facilitator for the district where I worked on curriculum writing and development, led professional development, and served as a model classroom for ELA instruction.
I grew up in Columbia, and studied Elementary Education at Columbia College. I received my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from The University of South Carolina. My husband James and I live in Cayce. We are both avid football fans, and during football season we are a true house divided – James cheers for USC, while I am loyal Clemson tiger! In my spare time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, exercising, and gardening. James and I are also members of Holland Avenue Baptist Church where we teach Sunday School to 5th and 6th graders.
I look forward to meeting the awesome students, faculty, staff, and parents at Midway!

Please remember that we are accepting registration for 5-year Kindergarten and new to Midway 1st graders. Please email Kelley Waslewski at kwaslewski@lexington1.net and she will send you the registration packet. This is very important to get these students enrolled as this is how the number of teachers is determined. We want to be ready for August! Also, spread the word to your new neighbors!
