Gator Report
October_November Edition 2021
Leaders of Tomorrow
Here at Dater Montessori, we not only educate the whole child, we celebrate the whole child through their accomplishments in and out of school as well! This new segment "Leaders of Tomorrow" is our opportunity to actively celebrate our students as a community.
In this month's segment, we have 5th grader Nyla Bobo. This past summer Nyla was able to participate at her church to become an entrepreneur. New Prospect Baptist Church had STEM camp this summer and an after camp program. The after camp program offered an entrepreneurship class that taught kids how to do a business plan, logo, marketing, etc. This class was exactly what Nyla needed to push her into creating her lip gloss line. Nyla cleared and sanitized a section of the house and got busy working on her dream. In 2021 'Glossy Pearl' was created.
As Nyla continues to work on her brand, her mother and FODM Cheryl Bobo, is continuing to help and guide her daughter on her exciting new endeavors.
If you have a student or child that you would like to see celebrated, please send a brief description to Teasha Tennyson at tennyst@cps-k12.org and a picture of the student and their work.
Artist of the Month
Thank you to Mr. Houston the art teacher for leading our students in their artistic abilities.

The Principals' Desk
Hello Dater Families,
This is Principal Jackson, I have an important announcement about arrival and dismissal. Starting Monday October 18th, 2021 parking across the street will no longer be possible due to construction, this property has been purchased by Metzcor. According to the signage construction should be completed in early 2022. Once construction is completed there will be a possibility that they will allow Dater families to park and walk students to and from school. We are currently looking at additional options but as of now, please continue to be patient in the car line, potentially consider the bus and of course walking is always an option. I have asked parents not park on campus during arrival and dismissal and I am going to continue to ask for your cooperation with this. Also I am noticing that students are being dropped off in the mornings and being left, this also is not authorized, if you need before care please reach out to the YMCA to see if there is any space available. Again students are not to be dropped off before 9am, there is no one to receive them before this time. I am currently working with our stakeholders to provide some alternatives to ensure that we can move effectively and of course safely during the two busiest periods of the day. I thank you for your cooperation and understanding and I will continue to be in touch with further developments. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you Monday Morning.
Go Gators!!
Social Worker's Corner
We have made it through the first two months of school! We understand that times are still challenging with navigating school attendance in the midst of COVID quarantines. CPS made some changes to the COVID quarantine policy with the start of this school year to minimize students being out of school (such as “quarantining at school” if a close contact exposure occurred in the classroom, and your child was masked and maintained at least 3 feet of social distancing, and is not showing symptoms; see Staying Safe During COVID-19 Student Guidelines for more information). It is extremely important for your child to attend school on time every day when he/she is healthy enough. Doors open at 9am and school begins promptly at 9:15am. Please communicate your child’s absences by calling the Dater Attendance Line at 513-363-0923 or submitting the absence online at https://datermontessori.cps-k12.org/contact/attendance-report. You can also notify your child’s teacher. Please communicate with the school each day your child will be absent. If your student is ill or has an appointment with a medical/therapeutic professional, please provide a copy of the note for your child’s absence when they return to school.
One important thing to note is that the State of Ohio has not waived notification requirements for students who meet excessive absence thresholds, even if those absences are excused due to COVID-19 quarantine. Students who miss 38 hours excused or unexcused in a month or 65 hours excused or unexcused for the school year are subject to receiving an absence notification letter by mail. Dater’s School Social Worker, Christine Miller, has advocated to the district for a change in this procedure when a student meets those thresholds solely because of COVID quarantine, but at this time the letter must still be sent to families.
If your student develops a pattern of absences, Christine may reach out to you to problem solve any barriers to attendance. Absences add up and we need to work together to keep our students on track! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Christine at 513-363-0982 or milchri@cps-k12.org.
Safety Tips from Nurse Kisha
We understand that runny nose, congestion, and sore throat is very common with our young people, but these are also COVID symptoms. With COVID numbers increasing, we must be diligent about tracking symptoms.
If your child has any of the symptoms below, please keep them at home and call the attendance line to report that your child will be absent due to illness. IF YOUR CHILD HAS ANY OF THE FOLLWING SYMPTOMS, THEY MUST HAVE A NEAGATIVE COVID TEST TO RETURN:
*Fever/Chills *Sore throat
*Cough *Loss of taste or smell
*Shortness of breath *Nausea/vomiting
*Diarrhea *Headache
*Runny nose/Congestion
Your child will be able to return to school based on ONE of the following:
If COVID results are negative and your child's symptoms appear to be resolving.
OR
After a 10 day isolation from the start of their symptoms if you opt NOT to test for COVID.
COVID testing is available here at the school Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm. Consents are available and must be signed in order for your child to be tested.
(The sample will be sent to Cincinnati Children's Hospital for testing. The turnaround time has been pretty fast, usually coming back the very next day but may take up to 72hrs.)
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me

Highschool Montessori Early Entrance
The Principals' Desk - Highschool Lottery
Dear Dater Montessori Grade 6 Families,
After much feedback from all of our Montessori families, we are excited to introduce our new CPS Early Montessori High School Application Period which opens on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 and runs through Friday, October 29, 2021.
Who is Eligible?
The Early Montessori High School Application process is for grade 6 students who wish to attend a CPS Montessori high school. Students must currently reside in the district and be enrolled in a CPS Montessori elementary school. Students who reside in the district and transferred from a CPS Montessori elementary to Cincinnati Digital Academy due to the pandemic are also eligible.
These students will be given priority to enter Clark Montessori High School or James N. Gamble Montessori High School based on their home address. Specifically, students who live west of the I-75 boundary will receive priority for Gamble Montessori High School and students who live east of the I-75 boundary will receive priority for Clark Montessori High School.
Students who live outside the boundaries of the Cincinnati Public School District may apply during the annual Open Enrollment Lottery period, May 1 – 31, 2022.
How Do I Apply?
Beginning September 21, eligible families can click on the link here to complete an online application or to obtain a paper copy. There is a digital version of the application, or you may turn in a paper copy to the following locations:

- Clark Montessori High School: 3030 Erie Ave, 45208

How Do I Learn More?

In addition, we are hosting the following events for students and families.
Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 – Information Session (Virtual)
All 6th grade Montessori families should have received an invitation to this information session which will be hosted virtually on the BlueJeans platform. If you believe you should have received an invitation and did not, please email Brooke Beiting at beitinb@cpsboe.k12.oh.us to be added to the session. The meeting will be recorded and shared for anyone who is interested but cannot attend in person.
Tuesday, September 16th – High School Nights (Virtual)
Families should have also received an invitation to either the Clark Montessori High School night or James N. Gamble Montessori High School night, based on your residence east or west of the I-75 meridian line. These events are also invitation-only and will be recorded. If you did not receive an invitation for either of these virtual sessions, please email Brooke Beiting at beitinb@cpsboe.k12.oh.us.
Shadow Days
For students who are excited to learn more about what high school life is like, we are happy to announce that we will be offering shadowing opportunities. These shadow days will offer students hands-on experience in our CPS Montessori high schools with the guidance of actual high school teachers and students. Please be on the lookout for additional details.
I know it seems like yesterday our grade 6 students were joining the Dater Montessori family, but we are ecstatic about the opportunities that lie ahead for this incredible group of young people.
SCPA Entrance
SCPA Entrance
SCPA Admission Process for Students Entering Grades 4-12
Step 1: To obtain the preparation packet visit scpa.cps-k12.org. Select the Enroll tab.
Step 2: Complete and submit the application and all supporting materials by January 7, 2022. Please note, the following supporting materials will need to be uploaded when completing the application: (1) Birth certificate; (2) Two Teacher Recommendations (one academic form and one artistic form); (3) Proof of residency (i.e. most recent utility bill, lease agreement or mortgage statement); (4) Proof of legal guardianship (if applicable); and (5) Recent photograph or head shot of your child. The out-of-district/state students must submit a $25.00 application fee payment made in the form of cash or money order payable to SCPA (currently we are not able to accept payment online, payment should be brought in/mailed to the school).
Step 3: After receipt of your completed application and payment, if applicable, the school will notify you by email of your exact audition date and time (please ensure your email address is correct on the application, if you do not list an email address we will contact you by phone and then mail). Students will be scheduled for audition dates and times based on school availability.
Step 4: The Audition Preparation Packet supporting material (i.e. visual art portfolio) must be completed and brought with you to the audition, unless otherwise stated. Please be on time for your audition. Students who arrive late to the audition will not be able to audition. Students who miss their audition will need to wait to audition for the following school year. This will require the student to (1) complete and submit the new application form, (2) submit all of the supporting materials and (3) audition again in person at the school for the next school year.
Step 5: Students will audition for the SCPA artistic faculty. Parents are not permitted in the audition area. Parents will have the opportunity to meet in the school theater with the SCPA Principal and SCPA Artistic Director. They will review the audition procedure with parents and give an overview of school curriculum and policies.
Step 6: SCPA will notify students by email and in writing of the audition result within 6 weeks after the audition date. In-district students will be accepted to SCPA or not accepted to SCPA. Out-of-district students will be notified by email and in writing if they have passed or did not pass the SCPA audition. Passing the audition does not guarantee an acceptance into the school. Out-of-district students must also be accepted through the Out-of-district Open Enrollment Process handled by CPS. Applications for Out-of-district Open Enrollment will be available May 1-31, 2022. If accepted through the CPS Out-of-district Open Enrollment, a letter of acceptance will be sent on behalf of CPS specifying what steps need to be taken to enroll your child.
Step 7: If accepted to SCPA, the parent/guardian will be sent an acceptance email with instructions on how to register your child. The parent/guardian must fully complete the registration.
Step 8: Both the online registration forms and the student/parent SCPA contract must be completed by the parent/guardian in order for the student to be registered at the school. A reasonable deadline for completion will be identified. If the parent/guardian does not complete and return the registration packet by the deadline the child may forfeit his/her eligibility to become an SCPA student.
Step 9: If the student is not accepted during the current school year, he or she may audition again the following school year. SCPA requires submission of all new applications and supporting materials each year.
Upcoming Audition Dates:
- Tuesday, January 18, 2022 – In District Auditions for Students entering Grades 7-12. This audition is only for students who currently reside in the Cincinnati Public School District.
- Wednesday, January 19, 2022 – In and Out-of-District Auditions for Students entering 4-6. This audition is for students who currently reside in the Cincinnati Public School District, and students that reside outside of the Cincinnati Public School District.

- Saturday, January 22, 2022 – In and Out of District Auditions for Students entering Grades 4-12. This audition is for students who currently reside in the Cincinnati Public School district, and students that reside outside of the Cincinnati Public School District.
A confirmed audition time will be sent by email, during the month of January, to you after we have received all completed paperwork. We must receive your complete application and all supporting materials no later than Friday, January 7, 2022 in order for you to be scheduled for any 2022-23 school year auditions.

October is National Bullying Awareness Month
Ø One out of every five (20.2%) students report being bullied. (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019 )
Ø Students who experience bullying are at increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, lower academic achievement, and dropping out of school. (Centers for Disease Control, 2019)
Ø Bullying is a serious issue that many parents are concerned with. Building resilience can help your child if they become a victim of bullying. Get started building your child’s resilience by discovering their strengths.
October is also ADHD Awareness Month
Ø Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts a person’s ability to pay attention, their self-control, and the executive functioning part of their brain. ADHD can cause challenges for a child’s school performance, ability to make friends, ability to finish tasks at home and school, and make it more difficult to control emotions. It can be difficult for families to know what to do next. https://beechacres.org/adhd-tips-for-parents/
