Principal's Corner

Dear Slate Hill Families,

This year we added family groups/constellations as part of our PBIS (positive behavior interventions and supports) plan to our monthly routine. Today was our 3rd constellation day where every student meets with their special adult (Slate Hill staff member) and their family of K-5th graders to do a special lesson and activity. Our constellation group lessons have so far been on Family (September) and Growth Mindset(October) and today's lesson was on Gratitude. We talked about what we are thankful for, learned more about our family members and created posters about gratitude.

Also, Today is Veterans Day so every classroom did various activities in celebration of Veterans Day like write letters to veterans, create flags and patriotic symbols, talk with a veteran both in person and on Zoom and create poems for our veterans. We want to thank all of our veterans and in honor of them have created this special video to honor our veterans for their service.

I also wanted to thank all of the parents that attended our PTA meeting last night! Your input, participation and positivity are always so appreciated. We love our Slate Hill families and are always thankful for your support and partnership!

Student Safety Reminders

  • Please use the car rider line (rather than parking out back) when dropping off/picking up your students by car.
  • While picking up/dropping off your student in the car rider line; please stay in your vehicle. Staff members will assist your student to/from the vehicle safely.
  • Please only drive in the appropriate parking lot lane, as trying to drive into the lanes where cars are exiting is unsafe.
  • If you have walked to the back of the school to pick up your students, please wait in the grassy area by the tree to receive them. There are many students exiting the building at dismissal and we need for everyone to be able to walk out the school doors safely.
  • We are all excited for the opening of the new section of the playground, but in order for all students to stay safe, we need for ALL STUDENTS & FAMILIES to exit the playground and school grounds at dismissal. You may return after 3:05pm if you would like to use the playground after school hours.

School Wide Safety Drill information

Slate Hill Elementary will be participating in a school-wide safety drill on November 17th at 10am. Students and staff will practice the Lock-out and Lock-down safety drills - two drills intended to keep students in classrooms during a suspected emergency and prevent all outside entrance into the school.

We realize that safety drills have the potential to create anxiety for students. Our goal will be to provide clear information in a caring manner and to conduct drills in a way that does not cause fear or anxiety for students. Prior to the drill, teachers will work with students in an age appropriate way to understand the difference between the two types of drills and to review expectations during each drill.

In addition, this safety drill will allow our school to practice communication in the event of a true emergency. As a parent/guardian, you can expect to receive notification on the day of the safety drill via email and text message at the onset of the drill and after it has concluded. Since this is occurring across all of our buildings, families with children in multiple schools will receive drill messages from each school. We apologize in advance for sending multiple messages, but we want to make sure all of our systems are working.

If you would like to confirm or correct a phone number or email address so you can receive notifications, please update your information in the Emergency Data Review section of the parent portal. Instructions can be found here: Emergency Data Review Instructions. Please update any information in advance of the scheduled drill.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

We are planning a Fun Family Night at Slate Hill on December 1st! This event will be from 6:30-8pm. It will be a pajama night of fun listening to an author, Conrad Storad share some books, snacks and playing board game with our families! Please look for the sign up in a separate email next week. Please plan to join us for an evening of Slate Hill family fun! Our Slate Hill Stars will also get to listen to Conrad Storad the next day at school. This is a very special treat provided by our Title 1 funding. You don't want to miss this family night on December 1st!

Health Clinic Request

The Slate Hill health clinic is need of Boys size 7/8 athletic pants (looser fitting, elastic waist pants). If you have any that you are willing to donate, please click the following link for more details. Thank You!!

Worthington Food Drive - Donate through November 17th!

Slate Hill is helping the Worthington Resource Pantry and St. Michael Church with their annual Holiday Food Drive this year! Now, through November 17th, Slate Hill will be collecting granola bars, healthy snacks, canned soups, canned chicken/tuna, shampoo, hand soap, and body wash. Feel free to send items in with your student, or drop items off during the school day. We will have boxes near the school office to collect the donated items. Thank you for your support!

Panorama Survey

As we have done for the last several years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from November 7 - November 18, 2022.

We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering these surveys. The survey content will ask students in grades 3-12 to self-reflect on School Safety, Teacher-Student Relationships, Sense of Belonging, Rigorous Expectations, and Self-Efficacy. Additionally, our students in grades 6-12 will also be asked to self-reflect on two additional topics; Diversity and Inclusion and Cultural Awareness.

Student voice matters to us and their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our instruction to meet their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.

If you have any questions about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey or would prefer your student not take it, please don’t hesitate to contact us in the office at 614-450-5000.
