Maggie Gaddis, a veteran CCCOnline instructor and former CCCOnline Program Chair, will touch upon several topics including behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism, and connectivism. Within these theories, she will highlight Merrill's first principles of instruction and the 5E model of science instruction. She will conclude with recommendations for including students in the dialogue of learning strategy--to help students become more aware of what they should do to study and why studying works.

Professional Development and Instructor Effectiveness
A recent article by education reporter Colleen Flaherty examines the issue of whether professional development efforts appear to bring about improvements in college instructor performance. Ms. Flaherty's article discusses the book Faculty Development and Student Learning: Assessing the Connections (Indiana University Press), which was written by William Condon, a professor of English at Washington State University; Ellen R. Iverson, director of evaluation at the Science Education Resource Center at Carleton College; Cathryn A. Manduca, director of Carleton’s Science Education Resource Center; Carol Rutz, director of the College Writing Program at Carleton; and Gudrun Willett, a cultural anthropologist at Ethnoscapes Global.
In her article, Ms. Flaherty explains that this book was based on parallel, multi-year studies at a private college, Carleton, and at the public Washington State University. Among other significant results, this research indicated that professional development for instructors has a long-term, continuing positive effect, which instructors use in their assignments and course materials. The book's authors also were able to correlate better student course outcomes in the courses of instructors who were thorough participants in professional development.
In a comment to Ms. Flaherty, author Carol Rutz noted “We argue that learning goals for faculty -- presented through workshops allied with institutional objectives -- powerfully advance student learning when coupled with assessment.” And, author William Condon told Ms. Flaherty that "what institutions value, as enacted in various faculty development opportunities, continues to 'spread,' even beyond the set of faculty who were directly involved in the original effort or initiative.”
