Marine City Middle School, Expressing Gratitude
This week and next at Marine City Middle School, our students are focusing on developing their understanding of gratitude in our Positivity Project learning. This character strength focuses on being aware and thankful for the good things that we have in our lives. During our P2 time in the days leading into the Thanksgiving holiday, students have been learning the importance of expressing thanks and showing gratitude for the time, effort, and actions of others.
Perfectly timed with our Positivity Project learning this week and the Thanksgiving holiday coming up next week, the Michigan Junior Honor Society group of Marine City Middle School has been putting their learning into action with their November service project. For the month of November, the 54 members of MJHS were given an American flag and given the important challenge of finding a veteran and thanking them for their service. Additionally, MJHS members were asked to give that flag to the service member and to take a picture with them, so that the entire school could appreciate their sacrifice and commitment.
Our students have taken to this task with incredible dedication and energy. The photos that have been taken now fill one of the windows of our media center and are the first thing that visitors see when they enter Marine City Middle School. The service project has been such a success that students are asking for more flags so that they can thank more veterans. Our members are also visiting grave sites to thank vets no longer with us and leaving flags in remembrance. According to the MJHS teacher-sponsor Mrs. McLeod, the best parts have been:
the stories that the students are sharing about “talking” to the veteran they thanked. I heard, “I never knew….” from so many students. The students were very excited to share their stories.
Seeing so many students stopping to look at the “Thank a Veteran” wall
Seeing the proud smiles as I open each photo on my computer
Personal touch
As we celebrated Veteran’s Day earlier this month (November 11th), and we learn about the importance of gratitude in Positivity Project time, and we look forward to the Thanksgiving holiday, MJHS and the staff and students of Marine City Middle School would like to say thank you. Thank you to all of the men and women that have sacrificed and have represented our country in the armed services. Words cannot begin to express the gratitude that we feel for the freedoms that you have helped protect.
Marine City Middle Staff Spotlight
This week the feature staff member for East China is Mrs. Annemarie McLeod, a fantastic teacher and activity sponsor at Marine City Middle School. Mrs. McLeod has taught 24 of her 26 year career in East China, having spent 12 years at Washington Elementary before moving to Marine City Middle where she is in her 12th year. Mrs. McLeod grew up in Detroit and graduated from Bishop Gallagher High School before attending Oakland University and earning her degree in Math. Her career started in the Port Huron School District at Central Middle School, where she worked for two years before sliding south and taking a position with East China Schools.
At Marine City Middle, Mrs. McLeod is a go-to person for student activities. She is currently the Junior Honor Society sponsor, a position that she has held for 10 years, and she is also the Student Council sponsor. Annemarie works tirelessly, giving up her lunches and after school time to create leadership opportunities for students. She has an amazing ability to relate to students, build productive and positive relationships, and to bring out the best qualities in students. Mrs. McLeod unearths talents in the students of Marine City Middle School that not even the students themselves knew they had. In the classroom, Mrs. McLeod is an exemplary teacher. She teaches 6th, 7th, and 8th grade STEM classes as well as 7th grade Pre-Algebra.
In her “spare” time, Mrs. McLeod enjoys connecting with her family. She has been married to her wonderful husband Joe for 21 years and she has four fantastic children. Mrs. McLeod enjoys snapchatting with Liam at Michigan Tech, watching Camille dance and play rugby at Oakland University, and watching Duncan and Cullen play lacrosse and hockey at SCHS. She even manages to work in some time with her puppy Marvel!
Marine City Middle School is a better place because of the commitment to excellence that Annemarie McLeod brings to work every single day.
