Middle School Moments
March 26, 2020
From the Desk of Mrs. McCoy, Middle School Principal
COVID-19...who even heard of that until recently! Those words will be planted in our minds for a long time as the thing that interrupted our whole lives in 2020. As we navigate it I always think of our students and their families. I pray for you daily!
Parents and our students are doing an amazing job! THANK YOU for partnering with us as we find our new 'norm' with you. Our SBA teachers are working long and hard for your children. You will not find a better group anywhere!
Because I know that in middle school, relationships transcend EVERYTHING, I think about the social and emotional impact on our students. Dr. Tim Elmore, the CEO of Growing Leaders, said in his blog today that there may be some positive impact on Generation Z, as well as some negative impact.
The negatives might be:
- The normalization of isolation. We know that many businesses are working from home already and some schools, but research shows that our screens cannot meet our needs. God created us to be social people. We need people.
- The normalization of panic and anxiety. We see and are witnessing the rise in anxiety, depression and mental health problems. At our recent parent meeting, our counselors gave us strategies to combat anxiety and I hope they are helping you.
- The normalization of a scarcity mindset. We cannot allow COVID -19 to remove hope, faith, and optimism from Gen Z.
Now, the good news from Dr. Elmore:
- The expansion of resourcefulness and innovation. I am watching this with our teachers and students. They are enjoying doing things in a different way or "outside of the box." I pray that we never lose that again.
- The expansion of saving and giving. People are talking about helping others, students are reaching out with cards, and hopefully, they will see how serving and saving reaps huge benefits for everyone.
- The expansion of responsive service workers. Gen Z students may see the need for nurses and emergency workers, and move into those fields. They may see many of the other service workers and head that way. I pray that God shows them the good in mankind through this pandemic and that they respond. They are our future!
Keep up the good work, and until I see you at school, stay safe.

AFFIRMATION
Discipline- it pays off in results-you must have it.
PRAYER
Father, I come to you humbly as one of your children. Today, I will discipline myself to be more like you, especially during these unprecedented times. Regardless of what’s happening, I will continually delight in you knowing you will give me the desires of my heart.
IN JESUS' NAME, AMEN.

Allergy Symptoms vs. COVID-19 Symptoms
As many of you know, seasonal allergies are running rampant at this time of the year. While COVID-19 spread is beginning to run rampant in our state and city, this can present with some confusion in deciphering symptoms between respiratory virus and allergy flare up.
Dr. Marc Crome, allergist from Chattanooga Allergy Clinic, says that a key difference is that in springtime allergies typically do not cause fevers as COVID-19 does. He states, "Typically with COVID-19 you're going to have a fever, body aches, you're going to feel like you have the flu if not worse in most patients. Some people have mild symptoms."
Secondly, allergy symptoms typically go away with medication, but COVID-19 symptoms may stay in a viral infection.
*If you feel like you have symptoms of COVID-19, please call your doctor immediately.
