The Sailor Signal
Cottage Lake Elementary - May 1, 2022
A note from Principal Welch
This coming week is a very special week! It is the national Teacher/Staff appreciation week. Our Cottage Lake staff are some of the very, very best in the business and the district. This is a week for not only celebrating our teachers but our entire staff. The PTA has worked to shower our staff with celebrations throughout the week but has also worked to establish an idea for families for each day of the week. Please see the flyer students came home with on Friday or read below to read the suggestions. You are not tied to just these ideas. If you'd like to do something else for a staff member at CL, please do so. We also have a book in the front office where staff has shared their "Favorite Things," so feel free to stop by the school or call the office if you'd like more information about a staff member. Thank you for joining me in celebrating all the incredible individuals that work at Cottage Lake!!
Also starting this Friday is our school auction. I am so thankful for our PTA who continues to do everything they can to support our school and students. Our school auction is always a very fun and well-attended event and I hope you will consider reading below to learn how you can participate. This year's auction will again be online, so you can begin viewing items for auction on Friday, May 6. The auction ends on May 13. Thank you to the auction committee for procuring donations and creating fun baskets and gifts to bid on.
I also want to thank the 91 families who have responded to the Intent to Return survey I have shared for the past two weeks. The survey results directly inform our staffing and I appreciate you sharing if you will be returning to CL in the fall, or your student/family will be attending elsewhere. If you still need to complete the survey, please look below for the link.
Lastly, this week we begin the state testing for our 3rd-5th grade students. Each year, students participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). Students are assessed in English Language Arts and Mathematics. In 5th grade, students are also assessed in Science. The schedule for testing will run through all of May and you can find those specific testing dates below. I ask that you do all you can to have your students at school each day. Ensuring students have a good night's sleep the night before and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning will support students in being ready to show their knowledge. If you know you will gone for any portion of the testing days, please let the office and your classroom teacher know ASAP.
Thank you for your continued support and for sharing your amazing children with us.
Have a great week!
~ Jennifer Welch, Principal

A note from Mr. Wallinger
Hello Cottage Lake Elementary Families,
Committee For Children has recently a series called Hot Chocolate Talk. This series helps guide parents and guardians through conversations about sexual abuse with their child in a way that is age appropriate and informative. These conversations are crucially important so that our children are equipped to refuse and report any forms of sexual abuse. If you're interested, check out the following link for more information: https://www.cfchildren.org/resources/child-abuse-prevention/

Staff Appreciation Week - May 2-6
Calling all CLE families! It’s time to gear up for a fun week of showing appreciation for all our incredible staff! It’s been a wild year, and this week is your time to make our staff feel the love.
The PTA will be hosting daily activities for the staff like lawn signs, coffee, treats, lunches, etc. We want your help in recognizing them too! A flyer should have been sent home last week with a list of each day’s activities along with a sheet to fill out about your teacher. Here’s the activities for kids to participate in each day:
- Monday – Teachers are noteworthy. Write your teacher a note to share how they have impacted you this year.
- Tuesday – Complete the “about my teacher” worksheet. Bring it to class on Tuesday and share your answers with your teacher.
- Wednesday – Wear your teacher’s favorite color or sports team.
- Thursday – Bring a flower (fresh or handmade) for your teacher
- Friday – Teachers teach us how to be a good friend. Today, show your teacher what you’ve learned by giving a compliment, being helpful, and showing kindness to others.
Let’s shine the light on our staff!
We welcome any and all families to participate in recognizing the Cottage Lake staff this coming week!
