Ground Water

What is ground water?

Ground water is the water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock. It is held in and moves very slowly through geologic formations of soil, sand and rocks that are called aquifers.

Porosity vs. Permiability

Porosity- The amount of space between sediment particles

Permeability- Materials ability to allow fluids to pass through

Porosity and permeability both help in ground water because you need to be able to store water and also let it pass through.

Effects of depleting ground water

-It will cost a lot because pumps will have to go deeper causing more energy needed to be used

-loss of support underground

-fresh water more likely to get contaminated

Main ways we pollute groundwater in the United States

-fertilizers and pesticides getting into aquifers

-toxic metal arsenic

-the use of gasoline and diesel (a really big one)

-chlorinated solvents
