MCSD Awarded Electric School Buses
MCSD is excited to share the South Carolina Department of Education announced Marion is a Clean School Bus award recipient. One of 16 districts in the state to receive the award, the district should receive 12 electric school buses. The Environmental Protection Agency started the Clean School Bus Program and awarded the state $58 million dollars to purchase electric buses. MCSD transports almost 4,000 students daily to and from school and is looking forward to modernizing their fleet of buses! To learn more about the program visit https://www.epa.gov/cleanschoolbus.
2021-2022 School Report Cards Released
After weeks being embargoed, the South Carolina Department of Education released the 2021- 2022 School Report Card ratings. Superintendent, Dr. Kandace Bethea shared, “We’ve seen growth that surpasses the state average and we’ve seen improvement in some of our school report card ratings, which we are proud of. We acknowledge there is still much work to do in the classrooms across the district in regards to student achievement, but we do want to recognize there has been some impressive student growth in classrooms and schools across the district.” The district’s average of student progress was 56.4% while the state average was 51%.
The district is also excited to share the improvement in school report card ratings.
The former Britton’s Neck Elementary School was rated “Unsatisfactory” in 2018-2019 with an overall score of 24. With two years of no ratings due to Covid, the now Creek Bridge STEM Academy is now rated "Average" with a score of 45, an increase of 21 points and a positive move of two categories. Creek Bridge Middle School also saw an improvement from “Below Average” in 2018-2019 with a score of 32 to an “Average” with an overall score of 42.
McCormick Elementary School also saw improvement in their rating. In 2018-2019 they were rated “Unsatisfactory” with an overall score of 29 and now have moved to “Average” with a score of 45, an improvement of 16 points and a positive shift of two categories.
We look forward to watching the continued growth of our students and schools as the 2022-2023 school year progresses!

MCSD's Superhero of the Month
Congratulations to Ms. Jaime Barrineau, Reading Coach at McCormick Elementary School for being chosen as October's Superhero of the Month. Ms. Barrineau was nominated by multiple members of the staff at MES for always going above and beyond, offering support to those in need, and her willingness to get the job done! Way to go Ms. Barrineau! Who will be November's superhero?
Planning for the Future
The junior and seniors at Marion and Mullins High Schools participated in an amazing day of opportunity attending the College Fair/Ed Op Day. With over 40 colleges, universities, and opportunities present, students were able to visit, digitally share their transcripts, fill out information cards and learn more about the options they have for the future.
Perfect Score on SC Ready
Johnasia Fling, a 4th grade student at Marion Intermediate School, scored a perfect score on the Math SC Ready test during our spring administration of the state assessment. She is the only student in the entire district to score a perfect score! Johnasia was recognized at the Marion County Board of Education October meeting and at her school. Congratulations Johnasia!
Johnasia's favorite subject is math. Johnasia is great at dance, loves to make bracelets, loves pizza, twix candy, and her favorite color is pink!
Student Progress Recognized
District and school leaders were recognized at the National Education Leaders' Conference last week in Atlanta. The recognition was for the excellent student progress measured on our state report card. Marion County School District surpassed the state average in student progress and in every subgroup of students tested.
