RE at Home
May 10 2020
May Greetings
I hope you are ALL doing well and enjoying the chilly weather we've had. . This Sunday, May 10 is Mother's Day! Did you know that Mother's Day was started by a Unitarian named Julia Ward Howe? She started Mother's Day as a way to unite mothers in promoting peace and ending war. You can learn more about Julia Ward Howe here--http://www.juliawardhowe.org/
This edition we are offering a mention and activity around Mother's Day. We want to be sensitive to the fact that not all children live with their parent(s) and we want to celebrate that there are many different types of families, all based on love. A child may be living with grandparents or a foster family; some families have single parents, step-parents, adoptive parents, and same-sex parents, to name just a few of the beautiful diversities called family. Our message to the children on this day will be that there are lots of different kinds of families and they are based on love (taken from Chalice Children, Tapestry of Faith) .
I hope you check out some of the ideas that are mentioned in this edition of RE at Home and as always I'd love to hear from you! Send me an email at dre@uufw.org.

We light this chalice for mothers and mothering;
to celebrate those who have taken on the task of nurturing a young one-baby, child, or youth-into adulthood;
to celebrate those who have nourished the light of truth and compassion in growing minds and hearts;
to celebrate those who have committed time, money, energy to the growth of others in this world.
We light this chalice to celebrate and hold dear this flame of love.

Parent's in Nature
Go outside and look for places where there might be birds or animals who have made a nest or home for their babies. What kind of places might animal mothers want for their babies? A safe place, a warm place.

Closing/Extinguish Chalice
We gather the warmth of love, [bring hands over "flame" and gather to your heart]
The light of truth, [bring hands over "flame" and gather to your heart again]
And the energy of action [bring hands over "flame" and gather to your heart again]
Into our hearts as we blow out the chalice. [blow out the "flame"]
Back into the world of do and say, [hold world in cupped hands]
Carry it forward into the dawning day. [arms overhead, hands together making the sun]
