Science starts! Soils and composting! Worms on their way!
This September has flown by and this week we will begin our first science unit on soils by reading books on soils and earthworms. Your children are highly interested in being soil sleuths! This coming week we will begin our investigations of soils. I thought it might be interesting to get a variety of soil samples to observe in class. Your child may bring some soil in a baggie. (I'm looking to see if we might discover different types - topsoils, sands, rocky soils, or clay.) By Monday, October 6th, everyone should bring in a Ziploc bag of leaves, grass, lettuce, small twigs, etc. so that we can make our own compost. We will be getting a delivery of worms, and we need a good habitat for them! Please put your child's name on the Ziploc bag!

Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic!
We had fun reading the book Miss Nelson is Missing and the two sequels! Senorita Devine read the book to us in Spanish and we did a character compare/contrast activity in both English and Spanish! In writer’s workshop Mrs. Gill is teaching us how to appreciate master writers like Jane Yolen (author of Owl Moon). We are writing about small moments that matter in our lives and learning how to stretch out those small moments with details. We even have little writer’s notebooks to jot down ideas we get for stories because we know that writers are always looking at things that happen in their lives for stories!
This week we are starting our Journeys reading program with the classic story Henry and Mudge! You can keep up with what’s going on in Math by reading the family letters. They are also on my e-board attached to each unit’s note along with the skills we are focusing on for that particular unit.
Don't forget to check the e-board!
MAKE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE ENRICHMENT WEBSITES EACH WEEK ON THE HOMEWORK TAB ON MY e-board! Websites that support what we are learning in the classroom can be found including SPELLING CITY!
ALSO, 2B'S CLASSROOM VISITATION DAYS WILL BE Wednesday, October 15th and Friday, October 17th. I apologize for the change. I will not be able to be in school on Thursday, October 16th due to a family medical situation.
Thanks for your understanding and support!
