December Family Update
The Learning Center 2023
Winter Break is Close
Greetings TLC Families.
It is December and even though we have less than three weeks left in the Fall Semester (December 19th is the last day!!!), we still have a tremendous amount of work left to do. We still have Winter Reading and Math MAP testing, final exams, and community portfolio evaluations in this shortened time frame. There are more details about these events below.
Please make sure you have access to Canvas, EOS, and Infinite Campus, so you can support your student behaviorally and academically. If you need assistance or have questions, please access our school website or call the school @ 381-0597.
We are continuing to support students under contract review, due to failing grades (more than 3), absences (12 or more), and discipline referrals (3 or more). Please review the TLC Contract for more details. Our Advisors will continue to work with these students and include their guardians in the process of reaching their goals.
If you or anyone else you know is interested in volunteering and partnering with TLC, please review the following website and fill out a volunteer application: FCPS Volunteer Information
Finally, please take the time to nominate a staff member that made a difference for your student(s):
TLC December Staff Member of the Month

TLC School Improvement Update
ATTENDANCE--We want every student to have a minimum of 85% attendance for the entire school year.
ACADEMIC GROWTH--We want every student to meet or exceed their MAP Reading and Math Growth Goal
LIFE READINESS--We want every student to meet the requirement for post secondary readiness according to the Kentucky Department of Education.
Attendance
We have just concluded our first attendance challenge of the year and the Freshman won with an attendance percentage of 84%. Our Freshman will be treated to pizza and ice cream before we leave for break. The Seniors came in second place with an overall attendance percentage of 80%. When we return to school in January, we will have another attendance challenge.
We know that during the winter months overall attendance traditionally decreases. Please continue to encourage your students to attend school on a regular basis. Nearly all of our students who struggle with attendance, also struggle academically.
How can you help?
- Make sure excuse notes are returned within three days of your students return to school.
- Refer your student for mental health services if that is affecting their attendance: Counseling Consent Form
- Help your student create healthy habits with regards to diet, sleep, and exercise.
- Schedule appointments on days in which school is not in session. Here is the FCPS calendar.
Academic Growth
The MAP Math and Reading window for the Winter is from December 4th-15th. . All students at TLC take the Reading and Math MAP tests in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. The MAP test is an adaptive test that measures a student's academic growth compared to other students around the nation.
In addition to MAP testing we also have final exams on December 14th, 15th, 18th, and 19th.
How can you help?
- Ask students about their MAP test experience.
- Ask students about their MAP goals.
- Review the finals schedule with your students.
- Discuss test taking strategies with your students.
Life Readiness
The most important focus for all of the TLC community is to ensure that all of our students graduate "life ready." We know that grades and test scores are important, but they don't capture all of the talents and skills demonstrated throughout our students' journey through high school.
At TLC, every student is required to create a portfolio to demonstrate their accomplishments as they have grown throughout their years at TLC that exemplifies the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate. All year, students have been working on their portfolio, which is a Google Site designed to showcase their talents, skills, and achievement both inside and outside of the classroom.
On December 12th and 13th, community members will be visiting TLC to review and evaluate student portfolios. This real life experience is designed to challenge students to be proud of and defend their achievements throughout their high school experience.
How can you help?
- Review your student's portfolio.
- Share this information with community members and ask them to Help Out!
