Chapter 4: Conducting Practicing and Deepening Lessons
Implications for Change
"The major implication for change regarding practicing and deepening lessons is that teachers must directly teach new sets of skills--other than academic content--directly to students. These include errors of attack, faulty logic, weak reference, misinformation, statistical limitations, and unproductive habits of mind. Each of these involves complex content that requires instruction in its own right. To illustrate, consider the error of faulty logic. Before students can recognize these errors, they must understand them. This implies that the teacher has to explain the errors and provide students with practice identifying them. The various productive habits of mind also require instruction and practice. Again, the teacher must provide examples and elicit examples from students. Habits of mind include:
- Staying focused when answers are not immediately apparent
- Pushing the limits of your knowledge and skills
- Generating and pursuing your own standards of excellence
- Seeking incremental steps
- Seeking accuracy
- Seeking clarity
- Resisting impulsivity
- Seeking cohesion and coherence
