Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
November 3, 2018
Happy November! The fall weather is wonderful... crisp, clean air and the sun shining! Hope that you are enjoying it!
Last Monday's evacuation drill was a great success! Thanks to everyone for making sure you were prepared with your rosters and green/red cards so the accountability procedures were easy! Once administration has developed a safe plan, will be in contact with you about how we can conduct an evacuation in non-classroom situations, such as passing periods and lunchtimes.
Thursday's all school mass was also a welcomed break in our week as we celebrated All Saints' Day. It was wonderful to see our students as Eucharistic Ministers, Readers, and Servers. Friday's All Souls' Day also provided our Marian community with the opportunity to pray for our loved departed.
Finally, we enjoyed a wonderful send off for Ryan Jones as he departed for state competition in Cross Country!
Looking ahead...
Marian's fall production of Much Ado About Will has been quite the hit throughout this weekend. A special thank you to Mrs. Connell and Ms. Gallagher for all of the tireless work they did to prepare our students for the production. In addition, thanks to those who worked the box office this weekend. Hopefully you also had a chance to see the production!
Monday brings a Code Red Drill. As described in our Faculty Handbook, A Code Red (Lockdown) is called when the situation is unstable and the risks are too great to have anyone moving about the school until the police arrive and assist in the assessment of the incident. Special Note: Be sure to check restrooms for any missing students during a crisis. This task will fall onto any staff member nearest to the restrooms.
Code Red Instructions:
• Close and lock classroom door.
• Move students away from door and windows if possible.
• Turn off lights and close blinds.
• Ignore fire alarm if it goes off.
• Make a list of students not in the classroom when Code Red is declared, including the name of any student who enters the room after the Code Red is declared. Report attendance as directed.
• Stop teaching and maintain order.
• Take class roster with you if directed to evacuate the classroom.
• Do not contact the office unless an emergency arises in your classroom or you have pertinent information concerning the current emergency.
• Remain in your classroom until you are released by a school official or emergency responder.
This Tuesday is Late Start (click here for agenda). If you recall, administration told you that this late start we will be hosting a Police Round Table session to review Code Red procedures. While we are going participating in the drill on Monday, take particular note of any concerns or questions you might have regarding it and bring them to the round table Tuesday.
A couple things about Late Start...
- Although we typically start at 7:30 am out of respect for those wanting to do morning voting, we will instead be starting at 8:00 am. Please be prompt, as we also need to respect the police officers' time that morning.
- Depending on how long the round table takes, the remainder of Late Start will be working on your curriculum alignment and departmental goals in your PLCs .
Friday is our yearly conference day. It is a long day, for sure, as parent meetings are from 8 am to 8pm with breaks for lunch (11-12 am provided by MCCHS) and dinner (4-5 pm provided by Marian's Parent Association. We have provided a link to each of you to be able to access the conference scheduler in real time, as parents sign up for conference slots. This way you will have more time to prepare for the day.
- As you know, each slot is 10 minutes long. To stay on schedule, respecting all parents' time as well as your colleagues, it may help to have a timer set. If a parent still feels the need to continue the conversation about their student with you, politely request that they email you so you can set up a mutually agreed upon date and time in the near future.
- If you anticipate a difficult conference and would like the support of administration, feel free to contact either Mrs. Loy or Ms. Novy and we will be happy to attend those conferences.
- Finally, look out for a little "surprise on wheels" over the course of the day, to provide you with some well -deserved goodies! We know how hectic this day can be on you, and we appreciate all you do to ensure that conference day is successful for all.
Have a wonderful week!
