Your child will come to the library on their birthday to pick a book and have their picture with the book added to the Birthday Book Club Bulletin Board and tweeted out with permission.

PBIS NEWS
Gleason Elementary R.O.A.R.S. in acknowledging the positive behaviors of students and teachers! At Gleason, our motto is Excellence Begins Here and the expectation is that all successfully meet the school’s academic and behavioral expectations daily. To remind our tigers of this, the staff developed the school-wide R.O.A.R. expectations.
The letters in R.O.A.R. stand for: Respectful, On-Task, Accountable and Responsible. Every individual that enters the building is encouraged to meet those school-wide behavioral expectations daily. As a part of this PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support), Gleason has Tiger Bucks as a school-wide incentive to receive positive acknowledgement for exhibiting the appropriate behaviors. We want our tigers to be caught doing positive interactions such as: learning to self correct, encouraging each other to follow the rules, and focusing on academic achievement. Your students can earn Tiger Bucks from all staff members and bus drivers. The Tiger Bucks then can be used to buy items at the R.O.A.R. Store on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will also have the Holiday R.O.A.R. Store where students can purchase gifts of gently used items for parents, siblings or someone special. Please see our R.O.A.R. Matrix to help encourage positive behaviors.
From the Counselor....Mrs. Salazar
Our time at school is limited so we rely on your involvement as the parent to help us make the value come alive each month. A monthly core value newsletter will be attached to the Gleason newsletter for some great tips. So, as you're watching tv, reading a story, out in the community or during family time at home talk about the value your child is learning. We encourage you as a family, to practice the value. At school, if your child is demonstrating the monthly value that we're focusing on, they may earn tiger bucks, a positive office referral or a spirit stick from a staff member. We appreciate you being for being a part of our team by participating in building these inward attitudes into outward behaviors!

College and Career week is October 7th-11th. On October 8th, we're looking for some guest speakers to present to our 3rd-5th graders about their career, their education path and the work habits it takes to be successful. Pre-Kindergarten
Welcome to Gleason and Pre-kinder! We are very excited to have your students in our classes this year. We know it is going to be a fabulous year together! We are getting to know our school and getting used to our routines. We have a lot to learn this year in Pre-K! We are focusing on recognizing our names and identifying the first letter. In mathematics, we are learning to count to 10 and reviewing our colors to begin sorting. We are going to begin working in stations to learn how to work together with our classmates and focus on being more responsible.
Please do not send a water bottle or snacks and don’t forget to pack an extra complete set of clothes for your student. Next Tuesday, September 10 will be Curriculum Night. We hope to see you either at 6:00 or 7:00PM for one of our presentations.
Kindergarten
Welcome to Kindergarten! In Reading Workshop, we are exploring fiction (favorite story time) and non-fiction (learn about the world) books by looking at the pictures, looking at the front cover, turning pages carefully, and using story book language to share our thoughts about the book. In Writing Workshop, we are discovering how to make books. In Math, we are learning to count to 20 and subitize 1-3. Please remember that your child needs to bring a dry, healthy snack and water bottle daily. Also, please place a change of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, and socks) in a Ziploc bag in your child’s backpack. We look forward to having an awesome school year with your child!
First Grade
Welcome back Gleason families to the 2019-2020 school year! We are looking forward to a great year with our First Graders! We have various exciting activities planned for the upcoming weeks. Please make sure to include dry healthy snacks for the week, a spill proof water bottle, and an extra change of clothes in your child’s backpack. In the coming weeks we will send out more information about upcoming events such as Adventure Dash, Curriculum Night, and Clubs. Please be sure to check your child’s take home folder daily, as well as look for any communication from your child’s teacher.
Second Grade
Welcome to Second Grade! It’s an exciting time for new beginnings. We have so much to learn and experience this year. We look forward to working together! Our second graders have been setting up norms and expectations for engaging in a community of Mathematicians. In Science, we will develop explanations using observations and what they already know about the world. Our second graders will also practice safety procedures when investigating the world. We are learning the procedures for reading workshop and building our reading stamina during independent reading. We are also creating our writing ideas list and using it to begin writing our personal small moments. We are looking forward to an amazing school year!
Third Grade
Welcome Gleason 3rd Grade families to the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited to have your children in our classrooms. Students were ecstatic to get the school year started and we can’t wait to see the growth they will make this year.
Our mathematicians have been working on place value to the hundred thousands, representing numbers in various forms, comparing/ordering numbers, and rounding. We will soon begin our addition and subtraction process with word problems and estimation. To support your child’s learning at home, you can review addition and subtraction flashcards, and talk about how we round or compare numbers outside of school (ex: shopping, cooking, etc.). We will have our first checkpoint on September 23rd.
In Science, we have learned our safety procedures and scientific practices such as collecting and using data. We will soon look at the heating and cooling of the states of matter.
In Reader’s Workshop, we’ve established our procedures, created a place to write about what we read, and we’ve looked at our reading habits to create goals to become even stronger readers. Our Reading & Language Arts DPM window starts September 3rd and ends of September 27th. Students will be assessed both individually and in whole group. Students will be assessed on the following components: high frequency words, writing sample and conventions. Results from this testing will be shared after the testing window closes.
In Writing, we have launched our Writer’s Workshop. Students were excited to begin using their Writer’s Notebooks to collect ideas. Students will explore the relationship between reading and writing, and how we use our books, storytelling, and relationships with people and places to generate good writing ideas. We will look at what we’ve read, to notice the craft of fiction and nonfiction books.
We look forward to seeing you all at Curriculum Night on September 10th.
Fourth Grade
We have rocked our first two weeks of the school year. We are very proud of the hard work and effort on behalf of our 4th graders. In this 9 week period we will:
-Reading: we will be working on sharpening our reading skills in the areas of making connections and growing our comprehension.
-Writing: we will be focusing on structure and adding voice to our writing.
- Math: we will be focusing on place value to the billions, decimals, representing decimals as fractions.
- Science: we will be studying forces, forms of energy and physical forms of matter.
We hope to continue to work hard and with students consistent effort make strides towards growth in all content areas.
Fifth Grade
Math - We are starting to review our place value using decimals going up to the thousandths. This will build the foundation for rounding, comparing and ordering numbers and later on in the school year multiplying and dividing decimals. Please ask you child, what is a decimal and what does it represent.
Science-Studying life science, needs and interactions, experimental design, and life cycles.
ELAR-Launching the reading and writing workshop. Students will be exploring different genres (fiction, informational, and biography), building classroom communities, sharing personal identities, comprehension processes, response skills, writing process, author’s purpose and craft, simple sentences, prepositional phrases and subject-verb agreement.
