History

1517 - Martin Luther - Protestant Reformation against Catholic Church.


1871 - German Empire, under the leadership of Chancellor Bismark.

1914 - 1918 World War I, an conflict that engulfed Europe. Germany fought with countries on both its east and west boarders. Germany lost the war and over 2.5 million lives.


1939 - 1944 World War II, The Second World War is considered to have started by Germany's invasion of Poland in September 1939. It was the most deadly and destructive war in history with over 50 million people having died.


1935 - 1944 The Holocaust is considered the state-sponsored murder of approximately six million Jewish men, women, and children by the Nazi regime led by Adolf Hitler. Many Soviet prisoners of war, Polish civilians, and disabled people were also killed during this time.


1961- 1989 Berlin Wall, was both built in 1961 around West Berlin to prevent people from leaving the communist ruled East Germany. The wall also served as a symbolic boundary between Democracy and Communism during the Cold War.

Government and Economy

Germany is a parliamentary democracy and is currently led by Angela Merkel. Germany is a member of the European Union and uses the Euro for its currency. German industries include metals, manufacturing, ship building, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita in Germany was recorded at $37,479.11 US dollars in 2012. Germany has the fourth largest GDP in the world.
