Winfield Elementary School Improvement Goals
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in reading.
All students will demonstrate measurable growth and achievement in mathematics.
From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Can you believe our first FULL week of school is complete? We've really enjoyed getting to know our students, meeting families at Open House, and building lasting connections. The first full week of school also brought a few student visitors to my door. Our goal is to proactively support positive behavior with our Positive Behavior Coach, Home-School Facilitator, PAWS Program, and Second Steps Lessons. If your child requires support from the office, he or she may speak with one of the following:
Mrs. Alonzo- academic concerns, attendance issues, bus and cafeteria conduct, bullying, fighting, insubordination, technology misuse
Mrs. Sims- bullying, peer conflict resolution, recess challenges, time needed away from class
Mrs. Mucha- divorce or family concerns, grief/loss, mental health support
Because we work as a team, this list is not exhaustive nor exclusive. The three of us work together to support the needs of all of our children and families. Please feel free to reach out to any of us if we can provide assistance. Depending on the student and issue, we will reach out to you via email (minor issues), phone (needing same day contact), or request a meeting in person (critical need). We very much value our partnership with each of our families!
From the Positive Behavior Coach, Mrs. Sims
Help Keep Our School Bully Free
The State of Indiana defines bullying (per IC 20-33-8-.2)
as overt, unwanted behavior that is:
1. REPEATED – happens more than once.
2. INTENTIONAL - happens on purpose.
3. HAS AN IMBALANCE OF POWER – makes the target feel afraid.
Bullying can come in different forms; physical, verbal, social, electronic, or written. Regardless of the approach, bullying is NOT OK and will NOT be accepted. We continue to take steps to keep Winfield Elementary Bully Free by providing:
· Bully Prevention Curriculum shared in every classroom by our Positive Behavior Coach
· Encouragement and rewards for positive behavior
· Individualized support for students who need additional help making good choices
We, as adults, must understand the difference between bullying and peer conflicts or friend issues. While mean acts are extremely unfortunate, not all are acts of bullying. Sometimes our students just make poor choices. Please know that anytime your child is having a problem at school, regardless of the reason, we always do our best to find a solution and deal the problem. Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected! We look forward to continue working with our students and families to keep our school bully free and ensure everyone feels safe while they are here.
From the Home-School Facilitator, Mrs. Mucha
Over the next few weeks I will share some research based news to help teach about us all about our brains and how they work in relation to everything around us. I am hoping that learning about how our brain works will empower parents and children to gain better control over their emotions and reactions. I will keep it short and sweet!
Our brains have three main components that impact our reaction and our ability to learn. There is the prefrontal cortex that helps us make good choices. The hippocampus is the memory bank that houses positive and negative experiences and sensations. Thirdly, The amygdala is the center for crisis and helps assess situations to be safe or dangerous. There is also the brain stem that will be referenced but that is where the message is first received. All the sections work together to decide if we are in a state of crisis or clear decision-making.
Next week we will learn about how these all work together to make a good choice or a bad choice.
From Our School Nurse, Mrs. Taylor
All immunization records, physicals, and dental reports are required on the first day of school. If you have not sent your child's records, please do so as soon as possible. Indiana requires all students have completed their required immunizations by the 20th day of school or they may be excluded from school until the information is provided.
Attention all 1st and 2nd grade parents:
If your child has had a change in their health status since the last school year, please call me with an update. I will be back in the office the week of August 14th.
