Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
Don’t you just love it when you learn something from children?
Dustin Alison, nationally ranked PCHS QB, has recently been thrust in the spotlight this year. It is important to note that he is also the number one leading passer in the state as well. Why is this important, and more importantly, what can we learn from him? In a recent interview, Dustin stated, "I go out there and do what I do on Friday nights and just let the stats take care of themselves." When I read this, I did a double-take. In the same interview, Coach Pennock stated that Dustin comes in on Sundays to watch film of himself and his opponents. He studies the game plan for the upcoming week to see how to best implement it on the field. Yet, on game day, he depends on his team and has to make multiple decisions every snap based on how things are playing out. Finally, I noticed that he throws the ball or aims at the spot on the field to where the receiver is running. That forces the receiver to work to overcome obstacles to reach the goal.
How does this work in education?
- We are highly ranked; yet, we have work to do because our students' needs are ever-changing.
- We have to prepare through studying data and planning to execute quality lessons each week.
- Students do not always perform academically or behaviorally as we expect. We have to make in the moment adjustments to address them in real-time.
- When we give our best every day - teach to the standards in an engaging way or hold students accountable for their behavior - we can let the stats take care of themselves.
- Instruction must aim at the goal by teaching 15-20% above the students to get in the zone of proximal development. With appropriate scaffolding, this is where learning takes place. Students will rise to the occasion.
- No one person is bigger than the team. Hence, leaders in and out of the classroom must realize that we work better together.
Wow! Out of the mouths of children, many lessons can be learned. Like Dustin, I am having the time of my life working alongside this amazing team of educators. Thank you for all that you are about to do this week. Have fun!
With that, I submit the Captain’s Log. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje

Our SLPs Rock!
This just in from Mrs. Rymsky Labat (soon to be Dr. Labat later this week)..."I am monitoring our compliance goal regarding completing S/L requirements of assigned evaluation/ assessment cases within 10 days. For the most part, it appears that you are completing these in 10 days or less! I know this is not an easy task (with all your other school duties) so I want to say thank you for all your efforts in this new process. Because of your efforts, our assessment team is operating approximately 30 days ahead of our 60-day timelines on most of our assessment cases! ....I just wanted to take the time to say thank you now. We are off to a great start!"
